Default RAM or McLeod clutch???????

ok, I'm looking at 2 different clutches but are about the same price. I own a 98 Z, I need ur oppinion and pros/cons on both. I only drive it to and from work during the weekdays and take it to the track on weekends so if the clutch feels like a race car clutch, that's fine with me.

-RAM setup w\910 disc(sintered iron on both sides)
billet steel flywheel, and SFI preesure plate and bolt kit
-Adjustable master cylinder $795.00+ship

-McLeod adj. master cylinder, steel flywheel, KEVLAR disk and pressure plate
$850.00+ship

I like both setups, I just cannot deside wichone I would want. Right now I am leaning more torwards the Mcleod because I've heard of them and I know they are BADASS clutches. Who's used one of the clutches, what did u like/not like, ect.

Well I just got the McLeod setup you're talking about and I have to say I'm very happy with it so far. No track times yet, but here are my impressions.

First off, having seen other clutches I have to say, visually the McLeod looks to be built with top notch quality.

This being my first aftermarket racing clutch I was expecting to have to sacrifice a ton of smoothness and drivability. Nothing could be further from the truth. Infact this clutch is smoother around town than my stock Z06 clutch was. Pedal pressure is the only significant difference in day to day driving. Not bad at all, but it is stiffer.

As far as performance all initial indicators are that this thing grabs hard. I just got new Nittos on last night and the few test runs I got were all grab! I barely even got the tires to bark. The nittos hooked and the clutch launched. Chad00Z28 was telling me his McLeod SDK barks the 3-4 shift!! I'm at the 1000 mile mark on mine and it just keeps getting better. Chad said by about 1500 miles it will really start to grab at it's full potential.

I give the McLeod a big thumbs up.

Mike

I'd like some info on both of them from people that have used one or both the clutches.

I haven't purchased one just yet but after talking to Mike at Ram I'm leaning towards there unit. I'm going for the 402 PP and the 910 Disc, with the billet flyweel and adjustable master cylinder. But get this I have over 40 passes on ET streets with my 02 Z clutch and over 100 DR passes. It still sixty foots in the 1.6x's. No RWHP#'s but I'm guessing around 370-380. Just a thought.

I am very happy with my Mcloed setup. I have over 20k miles on it and it still bites HARD! The pedal pressure was alot more than I expected but as soon as I did the "drill mod", the pressure was just as soft as stock! I am currently pricing out my future replacement but looks like I am leaning towards another Mcloed but I havent ruled out the Ram yet. 20k miles and my flywheel is in great shape with no chatter and the only thing I would probably change out is the clutch, everything else looks fine so far.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

stang killer,
from what I understand if u run a higher performance clutch with the stock flywheel it's better to do the "drill mod" on ur flywheel so the clutch will "run better". all u do is....drill ur flywheel. It'll help disapate the heat better and will not get as hot also, like drilled rotors for brakes. but the McLeod setup I'm looking at comes with a steel flywheel that is already drilled.

Screamin, actually the drill mod is done to the hydraulic line to eliminate the restriction in the hose and allow more fluid travel and better pedal pressure. If you do a search you should find the complete instructions for it or email me and I can send you the copied documents I have from GHTP.

We wont sell you anything that we would not use on our own vehicles and we wont sell something just because its the "HOT ITEM" just to make money. So Im saying that we sell only RAM because its freaking awesome!! But if your unsure of which one you want, you are taking the right approach by getting feedback on this thread, Just let us know if you have any questions on the RAM setup.. Good Luck!

J, i would say you will like either. i know Harlan (10 sec twin turbo hawk on here) really likes it and hell, if he cant destroy it right away, not many will be able too! both are proven though more will have the mcleod since they sell a "package."

you know i like the mcleod. it held everthing i gave it and countless low low 1.6 short times. also it is smoooooth which is something so nice in a daily driver. also after seeing mark schomaker's clutch after only 30K miles and 300 some passes (nearly all in the 1.6-1.5 range) i was sold! it looked great.

you will be fine with either. my vote is based on what i know. mcleod. spend now or spend twice as much later if you buy the wrong clutch (cough:SPEC)!

Never tried a Ram, but I like my Mcloed. Lots of people I know have run them with no problems.

I can easily comment as I have owned several types of clutches including McLeod and currently RAM ... I returned several McLeod clutches and had severe problems with each, I would not and do not recommend their product. But that is personal because of all the money I wasted with them (parts and installs). After working with RAM to develop their clutches (test bed vehicle) I have NEVER had an issue. The only deal with RAM is picking the application that is right for you and your driving habits / expectations. IMO, no other company offers as many choices.
