Default Frequently Asked Questions

Okay here is another thread of my frequently asked questions. It should answer alot of questions for you guys:

1. Will a Vette Trans work in an F-Body?
Answer: Not without making alot of modifications. The vette is a transaxle and the f-body is not. You would have to change the mainshaft to the GTO, front plate to the LS1, tailshaft housing to the FBody and the shift rails.

2. Will an LT1 trans bolt in and LS1 and visa versa?
Answer: No. The input shaft and front plate are different. You can change those and check endplay and it will be a direct bolt in.

3. What fluid should I use in a stock trans and where do I get it?
Answer: Mobil 1 ATF or GM Synchromesh are the best. You can get them at either the auto parts store or for the GM Synchromesh that is from the dealership.

4. Will a GTO trans bolt into and FBody?
Answer: Yes but you must change the rear offset lever. That is done at the tailshaft housing and is very easy to do. No tear down is required.

5. What hydraulic fluid do I use in my master?
Answer: Any dot 3 fluid but make sure it does not contain silicone. That eats the seals

5. Can you replace the tailshaft seal without pulling the trans and are there any special tools required?
Answer: Yes you just need a screw driver, locktite for the seal, the seal and something to press it on with like a large socket. We have customers call and do this quite often.

If you have a common question you would like me to answer and post in here, feel free to ask. I try to do this often to give the newbies a chance at finding there answers before posting a new thread.

Thanks,
Amber

Please explain this recommendation - both GM and Tremec recommend Dexron ATF for the T56.

Does a T56 require a shifter with stops?
I've done a search here and some say no, some say yes.

I am also confused about the fluid. Many have said NOT to use a synthetic fluid buy you said to use Mobil 1 ATF, which is synthetic (at least the stuff I just saw the store was..). I guess I will go with synchromesh.

No you can not proshift a C5. It is triple cone and that can not be faceplated or proshifted.

As for the fluid Tremec recommends Dextron 3 which is what Mobil 1 ATF is. Not sure who does not recommend synthetic but the manufacturer does.

No you can use any shifter you like. Our preference is the pro 5.0 which has stops but that is only what we like.

For those that don't already know pennzoil makes the gm Synchromesh. It is also sold at alot of parts stores as pennzoil Synchromesh for about half the price of the gm.

That is correct. From what we can tell just about all of the Synchromesh fluids are the same. Most of my customers use the Pennzoil since it is easier to get and less costly.

I've a T56 (48k miles) behind a new 402 on an 05 GTO and needless to say it's on borrowed time. I'm having an issue shifting this thing at higher RPM's. No matter what I do I can't shift this thing at redline. It's like hitting a brick wall. I have to wait for the rpm's to come down in order to get it into gear. After reading up on the T56 I've noticed that this is a common issue with alot of people. What could be causing this? Hydraulics? Clutch(Spec stg 3+)? I really don't want to go auto but will if this tranny doesn't start cooperating.

Thanks

I have the same problem as Bx goat. My T56 will not go into 3rd or 4th over 6K rpms. shifts fine granny shifting at lower rpms, but will not shift hard like it use to. also on a spec 3+ (brand new one) I was going to get a rebuild.

Also, I'm looking at one fo your stage 1 or 2 rebuilds. What would shipping costs both ways from CT 06374 to Texas & back cost? Might be cheaper for me to pay a core charge?

Until the end of the month shipping is free. Then after that it would be $60 each way.

Thanks,

Depending on what you want included with the synchro. A complete synchro is made up of the blocker ring, inner slider hub, outer slider hub, keys and springs. If you need a complete set of synchros and you need the sliders to here is what you need:

1/2 Slider- $115
3/4 Slider- $115
5/6 Slider- $95
Reverse Slider- $95
Blocker ring kit- $169

When people say then need the synchros they normally just want the blocker ring kit. Depending on if the teeth on the slider are rounded would depend on if it needs replacing.

Thanks,
Amber
