How do you know when your clutch needs to be replaced?

When the car doesn't move while your bouncing off the rev limiter <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_images/icons/tongue.gif" />

Then I "guess" my clutch is good. I am slamming the gas in first to about 4500 rpm then shifting and the rpms stay at one point even though the car is going faster and getting louder.
99ta - I'm going to try that, thanks.

Joe, that just sounds like wheel spin to me <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> . Are you sure you aren't just spinning the tires into second gear?
Try that around a curve <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[evil]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_devil.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[burn out]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_burnout.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Your clutch will probably hold at 35mph in 6th but at max torque (4500+ RPM), the clutch will slip. When the clutch slips at high RPM, acceleration will drop of DRIMATICLAY (it feels exactly like you pushed the clutch in).

Put the car in 3rd, rev to about 4k and let the clutch go... If you spin the tires, the clutch is good.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Re: How do you know when your clutch needs to be replaced?
Joe, If your car has over 40K mi on it, you'd better start thinking about a new disc & pressure plate, and having the flywheel checked....especially if you're going to take it to the track, come spring. Best wishes. WJ. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Re: How do you know when your clutch needs to be replaced?
Hello All,
I was reading the posts and had a question.
I was driving home today. With the ASR on I slipped the clutch and the car went to redline.
I let off but P.U. The smell. Drove it later and it drove fine. History: GM installed Syncro's under warranty last month (prior owner was having to much fun) The GM guy said the clucth was like new.
So should I go back and see if the clutch is going bad. The smell seems to be gone. Thanks!
