Default noobie t56 question

i just bought a 2000 z28 with a t56. it has 90,000 miles on it and while driving home i noticed the car does not like to downshift to 4th or 3rd gear it grinds a little and then falls into gear. is this a problem for anyone am i going to have to rebuild it soon is it low on fluid? any help would be useful.

I would change the fluid and see how it is.

Agreed... Change the fluid. Use Mobil 1 ATF 4 QTS and see if it gets better.

Default T56 downshift

Yep, try the fluid. If that don't fix it, rebuild time? Prolly 3/4 syncro ***.. And maybe even 3rd and 4th gear (depending on wear) ?? $ $

I've grabbed a few parts from Amber & Joe @ Sixpeeds, they know their stuff !

Enjoy !

Aside from the fluid, which I switched to Pennzoil Synchromesh with great results.

does your car come with a after market shifter that had adjustible stops?? Also if its cold where you live it takes a few minutes for the trans oil to warm up.

The T56 is very well known for 3/4 shifting issues as stock . Replace the fork with a steel one and replace the 3&4 rings and the issue should get a lot better .

Of course I'd try the fluid change first but doubt thats going to do anything in this situation .

yeah just changes the fluid and it makes slightly less noise i only drove about ten miles so i dont know maybe it will still get slightly better but it just makes a skight grinding noise when i enter third or fourth gear on a downshift.

Sounds like the blocker rings are worn. If the fluid change didn't fix the issue you are due for a rebuild. Do it before it gets worse or the cost goes up. Replace the 3/4 fork with the steel one, use the carbon blocker rings, do the billet 3/4 keys and bronze fork pads and you will have a nice stout transmission.
