From Chicago Tribune (Phil Rosenthal)

With Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" segueing into the Beatles' rendition of "Rock 'n' Roll Music," Chicago's WZZN-FM 94.7 christened itself an oldies station at not-so-high noon Monday.

So much for hard rock and, with it, WZZN's program director Bill Gamble, assistant program director Steve Levy and the station's old on-air talent.

The Walt Disney Co.-owned outlet, known since late 2000 as The Zone, now hopes to be known as Chicago's True Oldies Channel.
The hope is to snare some of the disenfranchised listeners who felt abandoned when Infinity Broadcasting earlier this year flipped its traditional oldies format at WJMK-FM 104.3 to Jack FM, a more contemporary, wide-ranging format of past hits.

Fans of the old WJMK format were urged by Infinity to tune in online through WJMK.com or through a digital secondary "HD" channel that's not yet commonly available. The new format WZZN is aimed squarely at them.

"Chicago radio has oldies back again," Pastor said. "Oldies fans are a different breed. ... This is a crowd that's very passionate, and it's too big to ignore--especially given the challenges of being a rock station in a market saturated with rock stations."
Glad I got XM...

I used to filp constantly between 94.7, 95.1, 97.9, and 97.1/96.9. Guess I can cross off 94.7 now.

It's called "The Drive". 97.1 is their broadcast channel closer to Chicago and 96.9 is the same station farther north near the WI/IL border.

It's mostly late '60s/'70s stuff (rock), some '80s as well. Similar to what you hear on 97.9 just a little older most of the time....

from what i heard, the people working there didnt even know, they came in in the morning played for a while and then at about noon were told to box it up and go home

i was at work when it happened, my manager was on lunch at noon and when he came back he was like what the hell is wrong with the radio

everytime i get a good station it goes by-by, i need to change 94.7, and 96.7 to something else, all i have now is Q101 (with this shuffle thing they suck now), 97.9, 95.9, 89.1, i think im gonna have to pop the tuning button back out and find some new stations

i can't beleive that a big city like chicago can't keep a station like 94.7 around they had the market covered, there are enough stations that play older music already, might have to look into sirius or xm radio

i can only hope your right.., as for my 12 disc, there all custom cd's with random songs so im not jsut stuck with 12 bands, then on more int he cd changer, and my mp3 dvd player hooked into thet gm9 aux has around 840songs, but that however isnt random there is no random option

We have a Jack FM here in Indy. No DJ's and very few commercials. It plays a variety of rock from the 80's to today. Funny thing is it was an oldies station before switching to the current format.
