Illinois emissons?
Does anybody no what the illinois law requires to pass emissons? I was looking to get some headers in the next month or so and was wondering if it would keep me from passing. Also I know this is in the wrong place but what about the biggest cam i can run in kane county illinois? Thanks.

This may not be of much help but, I'm a CT emissions tester, the way we test newer cars (OBD II, compatible 96 and up) is we simply plug into your onbord computer. as long as the check engine light isnt on you'll pass just fine... but thats here in CT... i would just call your local DMV... you may have to wait on the phone for hours but they should be able to answer your question.

I use to work at MO testing stations also. OBDII checks for readiness and codes only. If Illinois use's the obdII test, what mods will pass/won't pass are irrevlent since they can all be taken care of with pcm tuning.
Were in IL do you live? I'm a local tuner in St. Louis if you should need any help.

IL is OBD scan only for '96 and up. No sniffer, no visual for '96+.

i have a bad feeling kane county has some really bad emmissions laws. I live in Kane county, (St. Charles) and have yet to take my car in. My parents told me that they had a sniffer when they brought in our 2000 minivan. this would really suck considering I am catless with a big *** cam.

Odd that your 2000 minivan would have had a sniffer. A 2000 model year car would have tested for the first time in '04. My '00 WS6 was also due in '04 for it's first test, and there was absolutely no sniffer used on that car, OBD scan only. Are your parents positive a sniffer was used? If so, I have no idea why. Should be scan only for '96 and up.

Phase 1: from July to October 2002: 1996 and newer vehicles that pass a gas cap pressure test and an OBD test will pass the emissions test. An exhaust test will not be performed when the vehicle passes the OBD test. If the vehicle fails the OBD test, it will be given a second chance to pass by receiving an exhaust test. In this phase, vehicles that fail the emissions test can be repaired to pass either the OBD test or the exhaust test.
Phase 2: from October 2002 to January 2004: Owners of 1996 and newer vehicles will be able to decide whether to repair their vehicle if it fails an OBD test, or to be given a second-chance exhaust test. In this phase, vehicles that fail the emissions test can be repaired to pass either the OBD test or the exhaust test.
Phase 3: beginning January 1, 2004: The emissions test for most 1996 and newer vehicles will consist of a gas cap pressure test and an OBD test. In this phase, vehicles that fail the OBD test must be repaired to pass the OBD test.

OBD -II cars all they want is to be able to pull the vin, & bin file on the PCM. Then the readness test status w/ no trouble code report. They also pull the generic hex out as well, it is all stored.
It is an emission test out of the hands of the inspector, their system does it all automatically.

I can tell you what happened to me from experience. I went the last week of October 2005 to the test station off I-55 and Rt. 30 in Joliet in my 1997 Cavilier...it was pretty busy ...10 cars each lane 9:30 am on a tuesday....all lanes from what I seen were still running the dyno run with the sniffer....I waited 10 minutes and a guy comes out and opens another bay and flips open a sign that says " 96 or newer vehicles " so I drove in first and got the OBD test....all other lanes were running the dyno with sniffer on all cars.
Thursday that same week, I took my wifes 2001 Honda CrV to the test station off I-355 and Ogden in Downers Grove at 9:30 am and there is 2 lanes that say "96 or newer only" open, I pull in and get the OBD.
I think it depends where you go....nicer neighborhoods where nicer, newer cars may play a roll in the station having OBD lanes open at all times. Pull away if you dont see the 96 or newer sign......both times it was the far left lanes. I dont think they run them all the time everywhere.

There is no reason why any '96 and newer cars should still be getting any sort of sniffer test in the state of IL. Obviously, you saw what you saw, but something is very wrong at that station if they are giving sniff tests to '96+ cars.
