Default those running no cats in IL come in

im planning on getting LTs for my 01 SS very soon and I want to get an ORY because its cheaper than a catted y, will free up more hp and is louder. just wondering if anyone in illinois has run into any trouble with the police for driving with no cats. I know it is against the law to tamper with your cats but im wondering how strictly it is actually enforced. I live in Dupage county and i know emissions testing wil not be an issue.

thanks

I've never had a problem... but my buddy Davin who has a 99 Cobra was pulled over in Schaumburg once for tinted windows... cop looked under the car to verify he had cats....

Matt (Epic) on this board was pulled over in Park Ridge (where he lives) for no cats... he now runs cats (his headers offer Interchangeable Cats ... I believe he has FLP headers)

I have not had any problems yet. If your car is quite loud you may get into trouble. My car is pretty quiet with the cutout closed, so it doesn't really arouse to much suspiscion.

No problems her, but like Horsist said: If you make yourself look like a 16 yr old peeon, driving in Schaumburg's Woodfield area on Saturday evening with rap music blasting and tinted windows, then yea - they'll pull you over and they'll look for any excuse to write you off

If you can, stick with a catted Y pipe. They really clean up and refine the sound over a raspy ORY.

Especially if you drive the car on the street and cruise it IMHO.

It's worth the money, trust me. I've had 4 sets of headers/Y Pipes now.

I was pulled over at least twice with no cats on my WS6. Once in my town (Lincolnwood) and once in Glenview, but it was by an IL state cop not a Glenview cop. One was for speeding, the other for squealing tires at a red light. Neither time did either cop say a word about my exhaust. Setup was pretty loud too....first one was stock manifolds/ORY/Flowmaster, second time was headers/ORY/Bassani with a lopey cam and raw fumes as well....

BTW, didn't get any tickets at either stop. Let me go on speeding and (very) minor tireburning.

You could always leave the cats on, but have them gutted. Gives the appearance that everything is P.C. A quick visual under the car, and no one's the wiser.

I have not been running cats for about 2 years. Only get pulled over when, I am by my parents house (Indian Head Park), for loud exhaust, (dump closed too). They hassle me about no front plate, tinted windows, loud exhaust, runnning slicks, but thats all they do.

But I did get a bunch of people pissed off at me at the drive-in movies this year when my first electric cut out broke and was stuck open. Cammin+headers+ory+dump= LOUD AS HELL!!!!

Matt (Epic) on this board was pulled over in Park Ridge (where he lives) for no cats...
That reminds me of a funny story. When I was in high school, my buddy had a 5.0 Mustang w/o cats and we got pulled over in Park Ridge. The cop looks it over and says, "Do you read Mustang Monthly? Look in the January copy in reader's rides. You'll see mine, looks just like yours, but mine's got cats." He gave my buddy a recognizance thing where there's no penalty if you get it fixed. I don't recall if he ever did put the cats back on.

I would agree with most people here that if you're in a wealthy/snooty/elderly area, you're asking for trouble if it's pretty loud. Otherwise, just idle by cops when possible and you should be fine.

I haven't had cats on mine for 3 years or so. I got pulled over a couple of times for speeding or squeeling the tires and the cops usualy would mention the loud exaust, but not anything about not having cats. Most of them were Chicago cops, if that helps..
