well it's been 5 or 6 months since roon fixed his laptop in exchange for a cam and install to be done to his car, sent multiple PMs and left voicemails and never got anything out of it. Roon owns a computer shop, so he fixed the laptop in 2 or 3 days and that was the deal they worked out.

Cam and install in exchange for a repair? That's a killer deal.

Roon, give me a job already.

That depends on what needed to be done. Laptops are, as a whole, a PITA to work on. Very specialized parts, and model specific.
If that is the deal they worked out, both sides should hold up their end of the bargain, regardless of the time/effort involved.

Alright, here is the entire story.

Back in May, Javier called me up and said his laptop won't boot up. This is the same laptop he uses to tune cars at work and on the side. It also had everyone's tunes on it that he had done, along with all sorts of really important data. So it was absolutely imperative that i fix his laptop, yet retain all the data. The windows xp operating system was FUCKED, along with a stick of 512mb ddr that would throw the always popular 'blue screen of death'. So i forked out the cash to replace the memory. After the memory was replaced, I then began slowly repairing windows, which was a total nightmare. Long story short, i finally get the laptop back to solid working order. I return it to him and he says he now wants me to fix his desktop. Turns out on the desktop, the motherboard and the hard drive were fucked. I replaced both of them and returned it back to him. The deal that was made was that I would eat the cost of all the parts ($319) in exchange for a cam ($379 usually) and I would cover the difference of $60. I would even go buy all the gaskets and coolant needed for the swap. We were then going to exchange labor for labor along with a basic tune on the car so it's driveable. If I wanted a good tune that would be extra cost. The swap was to be completed in 1-2 days on the weekend. I had no problem with any of this, and it was apparent to me that he had no problem with it either. Then like 2 months ago, out of nowhere, after i've been trying to get ahold of him for a few months, he pm's me and says I can do it tomorrow but it's going to cost you $400 and it will take a few days. I was really pissed about this, so i pm him back and stressed how angry i was at the situation but also asked him when i can stop by and got no reply. So here i am 5 months later with nothing to show for it. I've sent dozens of PM's, IM's, phone calls and voicemails. Whenever anyone see's him and asks about this situation, he says he's never online or that his phone is messed up. At this point, I would just like the cash that I spent and I'll let the labor cost go.

That sucks. Did you get your money back out of it at least?

If they have any openings at the university let me know. What type of work is it? I'm totally down for putting power supplies in library computers when they pop. Only problem is I'm going to school in January full-time, so that would **** me.

Thats why cash in exchange for services is allways best.

When someone agrees to do labor in exhange then the problem is them finding the time to do it. Thats why you whould agree to a date to have both done by.

I have a friend that owes me like $100 and its been since like mid summer but he is a good friend and I have owed him cash for stuff before and vise versa and in the end we get our money. He needs it more then I do so what do I care if I am going to get it? He also also hooked me up and fixed my beater for me once.

Id stick with goods for goods, aka parts or cash for services. Doing it the way you guysdid it tends to lead to problems. I hope it works out for you though. Maybe you could have kept the lap top till he finished your car? Say you fix it Wed, Thur, Fri, he does your car that weekend, you pick up the car and he gets the computer.........

Its still complicated, cash for parts/labor is the way to go.

Good luck man.
