I have been looking at some new pickups here lately. Trying to decide between a silverado and a f-150. I started looking underneath and i noticed how tiny the rear diff is on the GM. Has anybody hear anything about them not holding up? Also, whats up with only drum brakes on the rear on the GM. I know that there are 2 axles offered on the Ford. 1 is the little 8.8 ( same as on the mustang) and the 9.75 what i run now. I know that the 9.75 will hold up to extreme abuse. Since there is 2 axles offered on the ford, is there 2 also avavilable on the GM? I am pretty sure that i like the gm more then the ford, i just was worried about the axle and brakes. What do you think is going to happen with GM warranty if they file? Should i be worried about that?

The stopping distances for the drum brakes are actually a few feet shorter than the disc/disc they used to have. The 1/2 ton doesn't offer a bigger diff as an option. They do offer an electonic locker, though. I saw a demo where the truck drove up an incline with one side in a waterfall and the other on dry pavement. You can get that locker in either 2wd or 4wd, too. As for the warranty, GM has to honor it regardless if they file Ch11. That's just a restructuring, not "selling to the bare walls" type liquidation. I'm biased, but I think the GM trucks are better than the others. Car and Driver just did a comparo and the Dodge won, the Ford got 2nd and the Chevy came in 3rd (1 point out of 200) behind the Ford. PM me if you want the number of my salesman @ Kelley GMC. He's a straight shooter and a good guy.

My unbiased opinon is that the Chevy trucks ride a lot nicer than the Fords, but the Fords can usually take a little more abuse in the long run.

FWIW my parent's 2000 and 2001 Silverados both have trashed cab corners, and they were both very well maintained. They both have had tranny and transfer case problems also. Guy at work with an '03 Silverado has lost two transfer cases also.

That Turbo dwarfs the milk jug. I don't think the 80 lb injectors will be enough now nick. Better step up to 120 lb.

Nick,

We'll have to build a support bracket for that fo' sho.

On a positive note I figured out how to save you ~90 dollars on the oil feed setup. Woohoo!

Let me know when you get the pan and stuff ready and we'll get some more work done on the car. Do you have access to a MIG to start tacking the hot side?

Oh and Drew, you'll appreciate this. I apparently have multiple gouges in my cornea. Guess that explains why my eye has been bothering me. RediMed gave me numbing agents for my eye. I now look even more special ed. then normal, but it doesn't bother me now.

Sold when the gas skyrocketed but we used to have a 2002 silverado short bed side step Z71, and I loved that truck, ride, turning radius, power, and 4 wheel always pulled us out. A lot of those trucks had an issue with the marker lights in front going out prematurely. and I think we had to tighten the steering wheel hub but that was it. Brakes were easy to change. I love a 5.3 ltr motor. Maybe ford does this too ,but the skin of the bed was plastic to save weight. we stil lonly got maybe 17-19mpg.
