Actually I have two founded IG complaints and made the MSG list.... I know what you are saying though especially when I was on the trail. I think at this point in my career most officers will leave me alone when it comes to soldiering.

Nice work IG complaints are extremely useful but some of the **** guys will try to call IG about are straight up BS and i cant even imagine the **** you guys on the trail have to deal with . I had a guys wife say she was going to call IG because we kept her hubby who was on extra duty until 2300 one night because they werent waxing the floor to the CSM's standards so they had to do it twice.

Dude was an E4 promotable and pissed hot for weed and the battalion cdr took it easy on him because he was squared away at work and he had some wacky excuse too and all she did was took his promotable status from him and put him on exta duty, no rank reuduction or pay taken. If you ask me he got off easy, and then his wifes got the nerve to threaten to call IG because he worked until 2300.

Should have busted his *** with the P and a rank to E-3, 45 and 45 with suspension of pay just to hang something over his head.

Second on that one... I saluted a Naval Chief Petty Officer once. He just laughed (I was a PFC, I am a Sgt now). He was kind of used to it. Said he used to salute back and laugh, but that got him in trouble once. There was only one person I refused to salute, but that was for a reason... long story no one really wants to hear...

A buddy of mine saluted a specialist because of the gold insignia they wear on thier collar. I got a good laugh out of it because it wasn't me and after all, I had saluted a Chief...

this is where being in an infantry unit is beneficial. you work around corpsman so you get a chance to learn how their structure is, and even better if you deploy to an army base. i've gotten the chance to learn everyone but the AF.
the navy confuses the **** out of me still, but that's due to the fact that they have a zillion billets. one once told me if you don't know just call them petty officer (unless chief obviously). the army is easy, it's almost identical to the Marines, just a few changes here and there.

You'll get a lot more respect if you come up and you can actually address them by their rank. I've had some thank me for taking the time to learn this ****.

and beating the **** out of your juniors shows a lot about how your maturity and professionalism levels are sitting at. lead by example?

As I approached and he could see my shirt he took notice of my rank and immediatley locked himself up and stayed like that until our converstaion was finished and he addressed me properly after every sentence.

I was uttlerly amazed because even in the Army now the younger soldiers tend to not feel like they have to stand at attention for officers or at parade rest for NCO's and they do not always address as sir or sergeant. When I was a private would never dare not stand at attention or parade rest when speaking to my superiors or not address them properly. Today it is different which is strange because its not like Ive been in 20 years or something. I also had a fresh out of basic private stand right next to me that weekend with his hands in his pockets and I had to correct him, you would think since he just got done basic he would know better especially when a superior is right next to him. I dont know what the hell they are teaching them in basic today

Anyway it was nice to see that there still is some discipline out there.
Thats how we are trained. If you have a higher rank, you deserved it and we show give respect to that. Also a sense of pride in our uniform and how we wear it.

So true...I actually had a colonel (O-6) Salute me the other day, and I'm an E-4 in the Navy!! You see MSGT's doing it too.

I find that almost impossible to believe because the only ranks that outrank an O6 are general officers and in all branches stars are the rank of general offciers. For an O6 to initiate a salute anyone other than a person with stars on their collar would be very strange.

Maybe he over anticipated your salute to him and returned it too early or something.

Hahaha, YES!!

For the first few days I was at Fort Dix training for my IA as an E4 I was saluted constantly, and called colonel on a couple of occasions (deploying Army reservist and NG guys). I actually felt pretty stupid when I had to let them know I was a PO3.

It was nice learning the different rank structure of the Army when I was there, and when we were deployed with the Alabama 226 ASG in Al asad, and I even learned the Air Force structure while I was there. I work with Marines constantly, so it comes natural. I always preach to my younger guys about learning the different rank structures. I am big on courtesy, and I don't want to be the dumbass walking by the senior enlisted, or O of the other service and saying "hey buddy".

Even knowing them, it is still pretty hard to pick out a MC top until I am about 5-10' away. lol

Yeah, I am not looking forward to wearing those. It is hard enough trying to pick out MC SE's/O's (MARPAT woodland) and now the Navy's gotta go and do the same thing, only blue.

Already been said but if a senior NCO comes into the room we stand up, parade rest, etc etc, commander comes in room gets called to attention, same when he leaves. Otherwise I'd say we're pretty lax in our shop with rank and what not. Granted the younger ranking guys don't always call us sgt so and so, repeatedly since we're talking back and forth most of the day, but they won't hesitate with the yes sir or no sir when it's more than just casual conversation. Marines definitely have it right with respect in the rank structures. I wish the AF were a bit more hard nosed about it. I'd never think to call an officer by their first name, or anyone higher ranked than me period. I should be more apt to do it with same and lower ranked individuals than I am now, but that's just kinda my thing. Just my 0.02, more of a ramble than anything
