I've been there a few times with the C-130 dropping guys for HALO school, but haven't been there since late 05. The base is out in the middle of nowhere, no BX. I always had a good time in town, but I was visiting. There's a difference. People like to visit Alaska, but I hate it here.

Anyways, there are casinos in town and it's fairly close to some good stuff in Cali and Mexico.

half of our company is getting sent to Mirimar in January. but they are going to be working in the brig still. Yuma only has a D-cell so if there are no detainees to watch i get to go tear up the streets in a v-6 impala, and i wanted to go to the evasive driving school, i would also like to pistol qual but my unit wont let me because im not a SNCO.

I'm going to have to side with jsteele on this one...but I have never been to yuma, so I'll take his word for it.

Whats your MOS? I assume your in the 58xx....if so everyone should be pistol qualified, not just staff and officers....if that is the case then someone dropped the ball on that one...

well at yuma you have the sand dunes and the river which are about 20 mins away and are two of my favorite places to be. the dunes are great for quads dirtbikes and lots of buggies. the river is good for wakeboarding and just relaxing/partying at sand bars and watching power boats race. there is also good dove and pheasant hunting in the area.

I was at Yuma, back in the day, for WTI. It sucked. I'm not much a an "e-clubber" but the e-club was actually "OK". It is in the middle of nowhere. I was stationed in Beaufort, SC. We left Beaufort with the temp at 51 (100% humidity). Several hours later, we arrived in good ole Yuma.. It was 126 on the flight line and NO HUMIDITY. OMG, to simply say it was hot, was an understatement. It hurt to breathe..

Some idiot (can't believe he was actually a Marine) got pissed at another Marine.. so, the idiot Lance Cooly called "his boys". He got them on the base and did a drive by shooting on my barracks! Excuse my french but that was totally f*cked up.. PMO, I believe, caught the guys after small car chase. Does anyone remember that? It happened back in 1996 I believe..

I was a 5962 stationed at Yuma for 4 years 1998 - 2002. It's hot, buy a jet ski or boat. Colorado river is really close and has some really nice camping spots. Nearest drag strip is in Phoenix, 3 hours away. San Diego is about 3 hours away and Las Vegas is about 4 hours.

It's not a bad place to be, lots of outdoor stuff to do. Glamis sand dunes are about 30 minutes and is a hot spot during the winter months.

Base housing was not bad when I was there and they were remolding it when I left so it's probably nicer. Sucks to be in base housing during WTI and having the harriers fly over at midnight. You get use to it though.

Stay away from a place called $h!t creek. Lots of gang bangers hang out there and was off limits for Marines when I was there, some still went though.

There is Arizona western college and a satellite campus for Northern Arizona University there.

The base has the normal accommodations, PX commissary, 7 day store.

Make the best of it, get and do stuff. We would throw the dogs in the truck and head off into the desert, pick a nice spot and camp there for the weekend.

Good luck, have fun and Semper Fi.
