Advice about my recruiter?

Advice about my recruiter?
I went to speak with the Army recruiter for the first time today, he asked basic questions and then what kind of jobs I'm interested in. I told him I've looked and decided on 25B (Information Technology Specialist) for sure, he didn't even know what that was and said something not even close to IT. He asked the recruiter beside him, he didn't know either. I had to tell them what it was, more than once.. =/
Besides that it went alright I guess, I didn't have a lot of questions and I'm glad! I'm looking forward to enlisting but not sure if I should find a recruiter that actually knows something first?

You can find all you want on the internet. I have been in a unit with 25B and it seemed like a good job but that is from the outside looking in. Do your research and don't let the recruiter talk you out of something you want.

I really don't have a lot of questions, I just don't want an ignorant recruiter screwing me over some how. He kept trying to sell me on the military, when I'm already joining so what is there to sell? Then he tried talking me into infantry. Oh and they had some hip-hop crap on the radio. Lol it wasn't what I expected..

Thanks. Yeah 25B is what I want to do for sure, my brother-in-law is 25B and works at HRC in D.C. I told the recruiter this and he seemed more interested in getting in contact with him, (my bro-in-law said he probably wanted a job) than giving me decent info.

a 25B is not a bad mos I take it you want to work with computers? The only problem that is going on with the 25B mos right now is the points are maxed out to make NCO but alot of signal MOS's are right now. If you are more interested in the network side there is the option if a 25N and the points are very low so making E-5 in less than a 3 years is very easy.
With a 25B you are looking about around 20 weeks of AIT. of coarse bonuses vary with every MOS, if you have any jrotc experience or college make sure you bring it to your recruiters attention it is worth rank which equals money.
You will be doing basic at ft jackson more than likely with that mos. then you will go to FT Gordon GA to 25th sig unless it changed and it will suck lol 20 weeks of a bunch of craziness just keep your bearing and dont get caught up in all the childish stuff and how some people go buck wild after basic.
the signal corps is a great area no matter what your MOS in the signal corps you will find yourself doing different jobs in every field, definetly learn as much as you can and TAKE advantage of the GI BILL make sure you sign up for that when they ask you, even though you can go to school for free the whole time you are in the army if you dont use the gi bill yourself you can pass it to spouses or children.
I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have, I am currently deployed and am a 25U and work along side 25B, 25S, 25Ns and can tell you what each job consists of. Remember just cause you have a specific mos you may find yourself doing a 25N job as a 25B depends on the need of the unit.
when you go to meps they will probably try to throw some other stuff at you with some money. You will be ok with the adsvab you dont have to score high on it to be a 25b. make sure you dont have any debt and hopefully a clean record because signal requires a security clearence. If you get in trouble in basic or AIT you can have that clearence pulled as well. not paying bills will cause you to lose it to.
and remember when they interrogate you at meps, YOU NEVER DID ANY DRUGS EVER, they will tell you they can find out but unless its on your record stick to NO, if you admit to even smoking weed one time then you will be hung up in the process for days and they probably will force you to reclass to a non secret mos.

Just because you quailfy for 25bravo doesnt mean its open. I wanted to be a heli mech, i got an 80 on my asvab and more than quailified for it but it wasnt open so i settled for a tank mech. If i dont like it i can change my mos in a few years. HAVE A BACK UP MOS. if you go in with your heart set on 25b and its not open then what? Look into other mos' just in case

Is you are interested in IT technology but want a different avenue, 35T is another good MOS to look into. It's an Intell Field MOS, but there's alot of IT work that goes along with the job. The exact title has changed to Military Intelligence Systems Maintainer/Integrator. You will need to obain a TS/SCI SSBI clearance so if your background is questionable, you might have a hard time getting this MOS.
Basically 35T is the evolution of the 33 MOS's. IT is a hugh part of the job now. The skills you learn as a 35 are WAY over and beyond more desirable than a 25B. That field is flooded in both the Military and the Civilian life. As a 35 you will learn alot of different job skills but can easily lean towards a specialty.
Plus as a 35 you'll get into UNIX/Linux ontop of M$ products.

Don't ever believe a recruiter, they're just like car salesmen, they don't know the answers to your questions, they're liars and they're trying to get as many recruits as possible. What I mean by lying is they'll tell you the MOS you're wanting is taken and direct you to a MOS that they need to fill. So right off hand, use the chain of command. Have you taken the ASVAB test yet? If not, you need to, so that way you'll see if you qualify for that MOS. Also, you'll see what other MOS's you qualify for. The better your score is, the more options in jobs you'll have. Dang, I wish I knew all of this before I enlisted.

If your dream job isnt open at MEPS, leave. Dont sign anything. You can go there as many times as you want until your job is open. It sucks but you wont be stuck in the infantry or any other job youll hate for 3 years.

I'm not bitter, it's just that I was 19, needed a job, was inexperienced about enlistment and supposedly their were only 2 MOS's open when I enlisted, {1st. Iraqi war} Infantry and Field Artillery. So let's just say I didn't have the greatest time in my life. Just wished I was more prepared for what was coming next, that's all.

Life lessons suck sometimes but that is not a reason to bash anyone because you had bad experience or didn't do enough research to make a decision based on what you want instead of what is offered. When I joined the army there wasn't an internet to do research, hell very few people even owned a computer. I got what I wanted because I asked questions and when I didn't get what I wanted I walked away, guess what they called back and said what I wanted was available after all. Just saying your experience isn't what everyone should expect like you tried to make it seem.

You are a "walk-in" contract. When i was a recruiter, we had about 5 walk-ins a day, usually they were all disqualified. I dont care how smart you think you are, you must be able to score high enough on the ASVAB to get this job you speak of. Also, there may not even be a slot in school for you.
You think you can walk in and get everything you ask for, you are wrong, and you are setting yourself up for an upset.
The army isnt going to roll the red carpet out for you, so dont expect it. Our recruiting numbers are through the roof now due to this economy.
Look at it this way, this recruiter only has to put in 2 contracts a month.
Say he has 2 kids that dont give a **** what job they get, as long as they get in, and then he has you, who is second guessing everything he says, and is dead set on a job, thats a hard sell in some cases. He will take the easy contract alllll day

I recruited for a while. If you came into the office and were set on only one job I wouldn't work with you, and it wouldn't have mattered how qualified you were.
There's a fair amount of work involved in getting someone in, not to mention a very early morning drive to meps (in my case). If you will only take one job that I have no control over and nothing else, it wouldn't be worth the trouble to me.
As far as wanting to talk to your brother in law, he probably wanted to see if he was realy in HRC and willing/able to help.
