I also have bad eyesight which kinda DQ's me for the air. I have heard that the military will pay for you to get Lasik or similar corrective eye surgery. However, you can NOT have had it done prior to joining up, yet they send all the prospective candidates to a civilian corrective eye surgery place. ??? Seems crazy but thats their policy. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I have always dreamed of flying. If I were to, no doubt I would FLY NAVY! Tailhooks biaaatch!

I have had PRK, I now see 20/15 and love it. Just make sure it gets cleared before hand. Don't just go out and do it then assume it will be okay with the military.

Wow. This thread is all over the place.

I am a Marine 2nd LT and I am in primary right now. I fly the T34C. I still have a few months before I select an airframe. I'm not trying to brag or anything, but I'm pretty sure I'll get FA-18's or AV8B Harriers.

Ahhh Mother Rucker....the rotorhead haven. Where not a single whiny jet can be heard for miles around, just the soothing thump of hundreds of helicopters full of student pilots all within the same airspace!

Make sure you get to Florala once or twice while you are there...the barbecue is great and the high school girls ought to be getting out of school soon and working the desk full time!

I'm currently a Boom Operator (in flight refueler) on a KC-10. I will be turning in my packet to OTS in the next month for a rated pilot spot. Having seen in the air, and refueled pretty much everything that flies fast enough to have wings owned by US and Coalition forces that takes gas in the sky, I have a pretty good idea what I want to fly, and what I DON'T want to fly.

If you want to get techincal, a gunner is a WO with an infantry background that is a specialist in weapons and is the resident expert to his CO in all issues of that regard. They wear a black bursting bomb in instead of a rank on 1 of thier collars. The term is often broadened to refer to all warrent officers as gunners though.
Both people in the UH-1 and AH-1 are pilots, not gunners. In the W, the front pilot operates the weapons though.
Being an AO and having gone through all the Xs to be designated a gunner on both airframes, I just refer to it as such. Very few people outside Marine aviation know what an AO is ( MOS 6199 is you get technical). If your Navy, they would think you were building ordnance (the AO rating). The few hundred thousand people in the Air Force know what a helo gunner is and it is much easier to say that than to re-explain the whole thing everytime someone asks what my wings are (Combat Aircrew Wings). I simply say I was a mech and a gunner. BTW, I did that for 8 years.

Are you talking about the B-1? I have heard they have a lot of mechanical problems. I have wanted to fly a B-1 from the beggining. IMO, they are the Lamborgini of bombers, and have a really sweet mission. But on the down side, I have heard their pilots don't get to fly them much, and I know their missions can be long, besides the fact their maintenance record isn't that good. I have also considered an A-10. From what I have heard, pilot training will help to determine which side of ACC vs. AMC I want to be on.

no, not in general...i actually think it's an OUTSTANDING airframe, and theres alot of cool upgrades for them on the horizen. there arent any planes in the military that can do what the b-1's do...

i had the chance to do a special duty here on dyess, augmenting the guys over in amc doing loadplanning and load crew (putting cargo on airplanes), and had a chance to talk to crew chiefs, and crawl on other frames...

I fly the WC-130J "Hurricane Hunters". Flying's fun. Here's a picture taken right as we were going into the eye of Hurricane Wilma a couple of years ago.

I've refueled you guys before I think. Is the WC-130J model the one with the X tail? I've got a picture of the air refueling somewhere. I'll try to find it and post it up.

Not us. We don't air refuel, but we are capable of 12hr+ missions=long.

Here is our airplane.
