I voted like it but its not that great. some parts of it are awesome, but there is a lot of parts of it that are terrible. I have yet to find a place with decent medical care, and i'm at my 4th duty station. and i'm no quite sure how a degree makes a person a better leader than the next. and don't even get me started on correspondence courses. I dunno if it has anything with me being a non combat arms mos, but it's nothing like I thought it would be. I re-enlisted once and I don't plan on doing it again. but I will say overall it has made me a better person. i've pushed myself further at SFAS than I ever thought I could go. overall, the army is a great experience though. i've seen a lot of different places and things and met more people than I ever thought I would.

I retired in 2007 after 20 years. For me the first 13-15 years were great. Hard work after the Gulf war started in 1990, but we had lost of people. That said. The last few years SUCKED. Due to a high ops tempo and les than 30% of the manning we had just 10 years earlier, we worked our *** off with little to no real appreciation.

I would recomend the millitary to anyone just getting out of school that either has no idea what they want to do, or wnts to got he college but dosen't have the money to do so. Screw the career thing.

So what do you recommend for those at the end of their enlistment?

You need the option of "Love and hate relationship"! lol. I kept telling myself I was going to get out for good after my Navy contract was up, but while home in the reserves I couldn't stand it and got a conditional release and joined the Army. There are a lot of things I hate about it but there are also a lot of things I like about it. I keep telling myself I'm getting out after this contract but in reality I'll probably end up re-enlisting.

So how has retired life been treating you? Thinking of dropping my papers once I'm done w/ this deployment in a few months. You are right though, IT CHANGED ALOT after DS/DS. This is my 18th deployment and can honestly say it'll be my last. Plan on taking 6 to 12 mos off to decompress and get the military AF mindset out of my system even though I'm an Army brat as well. That's 40 yrs of the military mindset I've got to delete from my hard drive. LOL

Take care and THANK YOU for your Service/Sacrifice!

Just like any other job... But some of the experiences you'll get and the people you meet, make it hard to ever regret...
