Seriously? The speed of sound is dependant on air density, and at sea level, it's ~768mph. So if you exceed this speed, you actually get a sonic wave to where you are traveling faster than speed at which sound moves. This disturbance is what causes the sonic boom. Think of thunder, it's from the static discharge of electricity moving faster than the speed of sound. That boom is it breaking the sound barrier. The larger the item, the bigger the boom.

The lower the altitude the harder it is to break the sound barrier. Most of the fighter jets in the military can do it. There is only two that I know really cant the aire forces F-117 and the warthog tank killer.

No problem. Sometimes it's tough to get a feel for if someone is joking or not.

I didn't post to be a dick, it just sounded kind of funny the way he posted "this sound barrier thing". I figured any speed freek would know what the sound barrier or speed of sound was, not exactly that it's 768 mph, but ah screw it, I'm not worrying about it.

If you've never experienced hearing a jet break the sound barrier, it's pretty cool.

very cool explanation Brien. id love to experiance that in person. ive seen the density cloud around the wings but never the actual Boom.

just goes to show you just how Baddass those machines are. its an amazing thing and its all very fascinating when you sit back and think about it.

heres something else thats cool.
whenever you here a whip crack or a towel snap and such? that my friend is the sound barrier being broken. thats where the SNAP comes from. the end of the whip is actually breaking the sound barrier thus producing a miniature sonic boom. (no ****)
