F-18 Superhornet Breaks Sound Barrier - Jones Beach Airshow
Sup guys,
We had an airshow today at the local beach, and I just so happened to get this on video. Check it out, it's sick.

It was unbelievable how loud it was. No one expected it at all, myself included. Next thing I know I nearly threw the camera

Actually he didnt break sound barrier but came close. I have never seen a superhornet actually break the sound barrier. I have seen a regular hornet do it many times. They are smaller and it takes less thrust a superhornet is heavier. When a jet breaks the sound barrier it sounds like a freakin gun went off right next to your ear totally badass. The lower the altitude the harder it is to break the sound barrier the higher the easier.

It's not that they can't break the sound barrier, it's the fact that their *** would be handed to them if they did it at less than a certain height, especially over non-military or open air space. My dad did aircraft instrumentation when he was in the military and currently works for the FAA and he's seen some guys end their military careers by breaking the barrier below the ceiling. It might even be a court marshal offense, especially if it's at an airshow or if politicians / media hear about it.
Needless to say, my dad's got some pretty cool stories of pilots doing things that pushed the envelopes of most aircraft, like pulling loops in helicopters circa the mid 70s.
The only thing better than giving you that rush of jets is hearing two top fuel cars come off the line from the 60' mark.
