The future seems like it will be getting a bit faster and lighter.

There have been similar designs for decades. There's even a thing called a barrel valve which eliminates standard poppet valves.

I'm curious why they would use air rather than high pressure oil. From the designs I've seen, a set up similar to a diesel injector using high pressure oil to open the valve is probably the best option.

Hopefully somebody makes this practical in the near future so we can see what it can do.

When I was 13 my dad and I took a road trip and along the way we got to talking about engines. He told me bak then the ideal engine would have a air powered or solenoid valve to open and close the valves. He said the problem would be the computer technology to control it at high Rpms. Looks like they've figured it out

Doesn't F1 engine use electromagnet actuators for valve actuation now?

No more cam swaps, just reprogram it to open the valves at different times, heights, etc. Could then be programmed for different valve timing/lifts etc for different RPM ranges.

really cool to see stuff like this happening. I was just thinking of how the internal combustion engine hasn't had any major radical changes in a while.

pretty awesome, think about your engine with several different settings you could probably select. tune a very streetable good gas milage setting, get to the track load you other valve setting and haul some serious ***
