Nothing is impossible over-power it enough or cross wires and anything can be fried. I'll put money on the fact that it was the stereo shop that broke the sub since everyone else has said Mike is a great person, and it was shipped perfectly.
I have seen a local shop do that kind of thing and more on purpose to sell new speakers.

this is why people use references when applying for jobs, referring body shops, bank loans....etc. Mike has some good references....the fact that they run the site really doesn`t matter, if they were some kind of web mafia, people just wouldn`t come to the site. not trying to stick my nose in, just know that this is the place to be for knowledge and they do work hard to keep this place pretty clean.
