Default Tuning advise

I don't plan on doing any engine mods for a while at least, (thinking Konis ) and I have a friend who has some tuning software (No dyno).

I know I'm near stock, but what can I change for some improvement?

Fan temps reset for earlyier operating, and shift points made firmer I guess we could change, but what else can we do?

Thanks for the advise...........

I see why disabling TM is good to do, but I hear disabling this can cause rapid death to your transmission.

I don't want to do anything that could hurt my car in the long run, for a short term minor boost in performance.

Thanks for the surgestion though.
Any others that could be considered safe?

What you can "do" all depends on if your friend knows what he/she is doing

Disabling torque management will be just fine.

Doing anything "racing" related to your transmission is much more of a fast death than disabling torque management.

Got to take it all into perspective

I admit I know practically nothing when it comes to tuning.
(I've only been interested in HOW cars work for a couple of years, and I'm still learning).

But my friend has tuned a 98 M6 LS1, and it drives well. But as I said, I don't want to do add any serious risk to my car / transmission etc ....

So adjusting stuff related to my transmission is a no no for me.
Is there anything I can do safely?

i wouldnt turn off TM either, just not worth getting another 60e

what you could do is tune it up top (WITH A WIDEBAND!!!) these cars are pig rich up top other than that that's pretty much it until you start getting some real bolt ons, sorry but LEDs and speakers and painted calipers arnt really engine mods that can be tuned

Thanks for your reply.

I know, I hope to do headers, TC and Cam one day, but that wont be for a while at least. I need to add some handleing ability first, and thats going to cost.

How do you mean ' rich up top', (air/fuel??) and how could we remedy that?

I read the sticky 'newbie mod guide', and it surgests doing a tune, even if stock, & I just wondered what could be changed before I buy the licence.

Thanks in advance.

yeah rich up top afr is if i remember (i dont have my computer with hpt with me right now) but i beleive its at like 11:1 or something really rich. GM did that on purpose to keep the engine safe from leaning out. every car is different but your best afr for NA is around 12.5-13:1 only way to find the most hp is on the dyno but getting in that area is where you want to be when at WOT.

Don't be afraid of disabling TM. RPM's are tougher on these trannys than anything else. I wouldn't hesitate to disable TM in your shoes. Running a cam that peaks 6500 plus is what kills a stock 60e IMHO.

I will consider TM.

So is changing my shift points to be firmer safe?

How much hp might we free up, or can we just improve a whole range of things slightly?

It sounds like there is very little we can do.

I also have the SES light on, (Slight Air conditioning problem) can we clear that off for good? (Had it cleared once but it came back )

Thanks for all the help guys.

Raising the line pressure to get firmer shifts is fine. It can enhance clutch life in the the tranny since faster shifts mean less slippage.

I have heard there is 10-15 hp to be gained on a stock motor with stock tune but honestly have no experience here.
