Default looking into an LS1

hey, im in high school and looking into possibly getting an LS1. i have a 1998 pontiac firebird that i purchased for $3,500. it came with the L36 motor which is a v6. if i were to do an engine swap for an LS1, would the same mounts work? and would i have to replace the tranny too or the rear end?

You would need new almost everything really... not worth the time and money when you could have got a 98 LS1 Camaro for like 7,000

yeah i realize that i could just get a whole new car but part of it is that i want to go through the actual process of the swap. time for me is definitely not an issue, money isn't so bad either, its just something that i would like to do. and when u say new everything, could that be narrowed down at all?

The rear end will work just fine, its the same rear that the V8 cars have except yours is an open unit instead of a limited slip. So if you want any chance of hooking up you'll have to upgrade the carrier to a limited slip unit.

Is your trans automatic or manual?? It its an auto, it should be the same. if its a manual, its totally different, and I'm not sure of the 5 speed will bolt up to the LS1. Even if it did it would probably blow up anyway, so your best bet is to get a complete motor/trans assembly in that case.

Not sure on the motor mounts. They will be in the same location, but the LS1 uses clamshell mounts with rubber inserts, I'm not familiar with the V6 mounts, they might be the same though, you'd have to check that out.

Youl would also need the entire computer and wiring harness out of a donor car to replace your current system. Its a lot of work, but it can be done if you have time, money, and patience.

I say find a LS1 parts car that was rear ended or something. Then you have a solid basis to begin the swap.
