Default Winter Storage

I Just recenetly purchased a 2001 Camaro SS SLP. I want to know what i should do in order to store it for the winter. It will be stored in a garage for the winter. What are the best things to do for the car while it sits for 3 months. If anyone has any advice on winter storage let me know. Thanks.

fill the tank with good gas to keep moisture out, add the proper amount of StaBil or similar fuel stabilizer

make sure the tires are inflated

disconnect or keep a battery tender ($30) on the battery

for 3 months, that's about all you NEED to do.

no need to start it untill you're ready to drive it. starting it only causes more wear...since you're dry starting it every time. better to dry start it once than to do it a half dozen times.

if you're worried about critters i've seen people tape up the mufflers and intake.

you can also put one of those moisture absorbers in the interior if you're worried

i would suggest changing the oil/filter AFTER the storage period, BEFORE starting it for the first time.

I didn't over inflate the tires. I've seen several people say: In winter storage you really don't see flat spots, but that's up to you guys.

I used a car cover too, nothing wrong with that, keeps off the dirt and dust.

Changed the oil as well and change it when it comes out of storage.

"Changed the oil as well and change it when it comes out of storage"

hmmm....so you do this

park car in garage

drain old oil

add new oil

leave car untouched for 4months

drain new oil

add new new oil

start car

are you worried the oil will break down in the oil pan...compared to sitting in the qt bottle on the store shelf?

just bustin your chops....

i agree the oil change is overboard. if anything put it in storage with used oil and change it when it comes out.

maybe it is, but can't be too careful. does it hurt to change dirty oil instead of letting it sit in the engine for 4-5 months? 20+ dollars isn't gonna break me

What is this **** about changing the oil after you store it for months? Don't leave dirty oil in there for months and months of storage.

Change the oil before you put it in storage period!

Thumbs down

Ken is right, you want to change it BEFORE storage and run the NEW oil thru the engine for a couple of minutes, that way the film of oil on the cylinders is CLEAN and non-acidic. I do go one step further and change it again in the spring since there may be moisture in the oil(wasteful maybe, but its piece of mind) and I do put the old oil into my DD since that is used more for long trips and will burn off the moisture a lil more/quicker
