Default electrical problem.

Lately when i go to start my car, it starts and the gauges dont move, then all of a sudden they shoot to max then drop all the way down, for example speedo jumps to 150mph, Rpms just to 7 grand Etc... engine is idling fine though when it happens. when it drops back down it says i have no gas and the rps are at 0 while the car is running, then 10 seconds later everything goes to its place and stays normal. It must be electrical if anything, but what specifically could it be , any ideas?

Sounds like a bad Ground or the Computer in the Gauge Cluster is running some kind of check for some reason..maybe in a trouble mode..

I had that happen when my battery was almost dead. Got it charged and it was all better. Might want to have that tested... free at autozone/checker.

If its not that id start checking wires. Good luck!

mine is doing the same as ericburt. i would like info and help on this topic also. my car started acting really funny. the gauges go crazy lik ericburt's description. also, on accessory, the battery is completely drained after like 20 minutes. only difference between ericburt's situation and mine, is that my car wont start. it will crank over but will not start. help please

I'd say it's a ground problem. Same thing happened in my '69 Charger-gauges would max out or die when the dash lights were turned on, the shared the same ground, or something...

It really does sound like a ground, just good luck finding where it is bad.

I guess work from the battery back.

sounds like the insulation has worn away on a wire and is touching ground somewhere. The hard part is trying to find it. Have you blown any fuses yet?

i had a surging issue and upgraded the ground wire form the chassis to the block on the driver side by the alternator...all better! i worked on a car that had a similar issue to this and it turned out to be the double roller timing chain/gear pushing the cam back into the block and ******* with the position sensor...hopefully you dont have that issue...
