hmm. what kind of air filter do you have?

my wix filter has a WAYYY taller seal than my old one had so it makes the lid a lot harder to get on and off.

post some pics somebody'll be able to tell you what kind it is

Here are some pictures, the filter is a K&N and there is a plastic insert that someone has cut up? I took the filter and insert out and just put the lid on and it doesnt very good still. Im thinking the lid is junk.

What is the insert for, just to support the filter?

First off, the lid is not back far enough. The lip on the lid should be just inside of the lip of the base, not hanging over. The bottom being cut out is the "free ram air" mod.

That aftermarket air bellow will make any lid hard to fit. I hate those things. Stick with the stock bellow, and any aftermarket lid will fit. I have a Whisper on my '98 car and an SLP on my '02 car. Both fit perfect with the stock bellows and a FRAM paper filter.

I dont have a stock elbow but I can see how that could be a problem. This lid i have has been hacked up so much I dont think I want to use it. Maybe Ill get a stock elbow and new lid.

This should solve all your lid related problems.

^^agreed.
the bellow you're using is a P.O.S. (i have one too) from SLP http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=23065 . i still use the POS SLP bellow since its firm enough to keep a nitrous nozle locked into place. i had to hack mine up to make aftermarket lids fid (just trim one end of the bellow to make it shorter).

even then, or with a stock bellow, the aftermarket lids aren't going to seal perfect.
the original SLP blackwing fits great, but will typically sell on ebay for around $200.

My SLP lid fits great. I'll probably be selling it here pretty soon.

To the OP, I have that same exact lid, and mine too really sucks. The fitment is horrible and the rear legs dont like to stay in either. I had an SLP lid on my last car, and it fit perfectly fine, other than rubbing on the underside of the hood.

I have a stock bellows with an slp lid and I have never had any fitment problems. One common problem (that I myself made) was that the front tab on the lid must tuck inside the base.

just installed my bellow. Noticed that the maf side is a little big and needs to be pushed far onto the maf. It took a little pursuasion to get the lid back on the car but after everything slid on once, it fit fairly well the second time.
