Question tuning?

my car is a bone stock (98' T/A) and I want to know if i should dyno tune it or if putting a lid, high flow air filter, and cat-back or cut-out would give me more rwhp?

Well a tune is always a good thing to have done, even to a bone stock car. But a good tune can easily run 350-500 bucks. But if you are only planning on filter, lid, and cat-back then you might as well spend that money on another part, and wait on the tune. BUT if you are planning on keeping your car with a lid, cat-back only forever, then a tune sounds like a good idea.

when it comes to the parts vs. the dyno tune, the power you pick up will be somewhat comparable. Both of those options can increase gas millage and how your car runs overall. To be honest with you, i know you are on a budget but i strongly suggest for what you want, to get the parts now, then you can get the tune down the road. (if you do the tune now and want to add the parts later you will want to re-tune it for optimum performance, thus waisting your money from the 1st tune.)

hmm...well if it were my car, id start cheap and easy so probably air intake first. then i would go to the exhaust. My opinion on that would be to do a full exhaust but you could always start with just the cat-back for now and add headers later if you want. You also could add an aftermarket throttle body. ls6 intake manifold is a big one (power for the money is great compared with other intakes.) i would not mess with the mass air flow sensor. thats quite a bit so far as entry level. when you get all the stuff you want then get the tune. any more questions dont hessitate to ask.

so what's a good combo for headers and cat-back. I heard fast toys has the best ram air systems. what do you think?

i really dont know much about fast toys. I have an SLP and its not too bad. so far as exhaust, iv always heard hooker and magnaflow are two of the best cat backs and they are good for the money. For what you are looking for i would recommend a set of hooker headsers, they are a great price and offer pretty good performance. theres ones a tad better but you'll pay double. throwing a full hooker on there might be an idea. it will be a well flowing exhaust for a good price. go to youtube and check out soundclips.

If you want affordable do what I did on my car.

Magnaflow cat-back
Pacesetter headers and Off-road Y-pipe
SLP lid

The following probably dont do much but I did em anyway cause there were cheap:
Ported and polished stock throttle body
SLP smooth bellows

Next for me is an LS6 intake and e-cutout... only then will I maybe tune the car. As of now I am still running un-tuned even after headers/ory/cat-back and lid.

The best headers for an F-body would be Kooks or ARH, both are great quality stainless steel, fit great, and perform great. For a budget header, you can't go wrong with Pace Setters. The fit better than almost all the headers in that price range. I've had Hooker S/C's in one of my F-Body's and i had to grind the K-Member a lot to get them in. As the other poster said, Magnaflow is probably the best for the money.

For lids I've had both the SLP and the FastToys one. My current set up has a 2002 Z06 MAF, so I went with the FastToys one for that. There's no reason to look past the SLP one though if you're retaining your stock MAF.

If you are going to do a full exhaust and a lid you might as well factor in getting a tune shortly after you have all of this done. The performance gain the parts wont have as much affect without it. Your looking at probably 30-40 hp gain with these parts and a tune.

i would say at least that with a good tune....pacesetters arent bad headers, my buddy swears by the hookes though, we put those in no problems at all having them fit.

with a lid, exhaust, and good tune you'd easily see a gain of 40 to the wheels

with exhaust and lid (and good tune) you are looking at around 350 to the wheels.

iv known a lot of people to make around 340 with auto's with those mods, 350 shouldnt be a problem with a 6 and a good tune.

lid/full exhaust auto's are normally closer to 330hp from what i've seen.

i'd do free mods(free ram air, tb bypass, port throttle body), lid, longtubes, then either a cutout or catback. in that order. good idea to do plugs/wires when you do LT's too, and i personally would only ever use stock replacement paper air filters.

i had my car tuned after that but only because it was $150 and i needed codes deleted anyway
