Ugh, my car does this when it's cold. It sounds nasty, but I don't know how to get rid of it... by the way, it's an LS1. From the reading I've done on it, it's a very common issue among these cars.

Yes it is very common for a noise at cold start up to be called piston slap.

It is unfortunately common for LS1 engines to have piston slap on cold startup. My 2000 GMC truck has done this since new. It now has 80,000 on it and it sounds the same, no worse.

common "problem" or whatever you want to call it... Wouldn't worry about it unless it's like really loud or something. My car had only 39k when I bought it and it did/does this.

gotta love the POS 98's.... i was reading that when GM revised the ls1 in 99 they went through a series of cost cuts, causing piston slap. I have never had it, however i have a buddy with a 2000 camaro and his has it.

Have you actually hear this car run? I wouldn't buy until you do. It could be normal but it could be a headache waiting to happen

I had it. Yes "had". I seafoamed my car today and it is magically gone. Don't know why or how, but it is.

But I wouldn't worry about it as long as it goes away after being warmed up. Very, very common.

Lucky! I seafoamed mine and it didn't do anything for the "slap." Course, that was when it was warm outside.

The 98's usually have no no PS.... It is most common in the 01-02's. My 98 T/A has none but my 99 z-71 has plenty but now has 185k and runs like the day I bought it with 84K in 02

My '02 also clatters when cold, though the noise
is a lot less noticeable now that it has a cam and
long tubes / ORY. Problem solved.

There were some motors in earlier production that
were overbored on cylinder #1, and the later years
went to tighter bore tolerances and coated pistons
to help it, but if your #1 plug doesn't foul out first
then you have no actual problem, other than
sounding like the UPS truck for the first 5 minutes.
