Well first of all go through it and check/change all your fluids. Engine oil, filter, tranny fluid and filter, rear diff fluid, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid. Then I'd change your air filter and plugs. Not only will this protect your car with new fluids since you don't know if/when the previous owner ever changed them but it also will give you a chance to see if your car is leaking any where on the bottom side.
For mods, I'd start with a lid and a catback exhaust and after that go for suspension. Torque arm, lower control arms and brackets, subframe connectors and a panhard bar. You'll be amazed.

how far off is the speedometer?
if he did put a 2.73 rear in there, you're geared to go 60mph in 1st gear, cruise in 6th at 65mph at 1100rpm, top out 4th at over 165mph, 5th at over 225mph and go 330mph in 6th gear... lol
i could see putting 2.73 in there as a replacement for fuel economy.
first thing you need to do is get someone with tuning software in your area to calibrate your speedometer for the gears you have... or for the 4.10 gearing you should swap in.

I'm pretty sure i have 3.42's. I think the seller was just didn't know what he was talking about. I still don't know why the speedometer is off by at least 10mph.

I have the same problem in which i believe that my speedometer feels more off the faster I go. I noticed this when I had the GPS in the car.
Feels like 40mph when I'm going 45mph and like 55mph when my thing reads 70mph.
I got the A4 GU5 3.23 Optional
Or atleast what the door sticker says.
Get an HP tuner thing? IF SO how hard is it to figure things out on those tuner things. I'm not computer stupid. I guess I could learn.
Any input guys?
