Default Descreening MAF

So, I know this has been brought up before. Can't seem to find thread though. I was wondering pros/cons of descreening my MAF sensor. Also I saw someone post that a K&N filter lets more dirt through than paper filters. Is this true? Thanks

The screen is supposed to straighten the airflow out so the MAF gets accurate and consistent readings.

Yes, tests on bobistheoilguy showed paper is a more effective filter than a cotton K&N and the foam AMSOIL filter too IIRC.

My car already had the MAF screen removed when I bought it. Cars runs perfectly fine, pulled a 13.4@107 with just a cat-back and lid... not the most impressive but it was good for my first time racing a manual car.

On the contrary though, I wouldn't have taken the screen off if my car had it. Also the screen's purpose is NOT to filter air... so the type of filter should have no reasoning on weather u descreen or not. Newer vettes dont even use this screen IIRC, so IMO either way its no difference.

unless you tune to accompany the descreen your car will most likely run like crap. the stock maf is good for around 400 rwhp. after that most people use speed density tuning. so just keep it as is

notice i said MOST likely. you also have a lot of mods that can benefit from it. on a mostly stock car it will more than likely mess up the fuel/air ratio

Searching on "descreen" I found 240 threads. Surely one of them is the one you were looking for, and 20 more like it.

Don't waste your time. Its probably more worthwhile to go to Lowes and buy a piece of rubber to make a smooth bellow.

the screens only purpose is to filter the air and protect the maf sensor.

You forgot the most important part - it smoothes out the airflow going to the hot wire, producing a linear signal.

Why are people still making these threads?

The screened MAF gives you (idealized) streamlined flow of air which tries to insure that the density of air is uniform.

come to think of it, i think mine may be descreened. i need to find a picture of what the screen looks like because im switching intakes and i looked in there and now that i recall i dont remember seeing a "screen" in front of the maf. the guy that had the car before me maybe removed it. and if thats a case i vote that it doesnt matter whether you tune it or not, my car runs amazingly.

FWIW I went from a screened stock MAF to an 85mm descreened MAF and the car ran the same. No problems whatsoever.
