Destroyed my rear end

Destroyed my rear end
So I knew my rear end was going to go and I had an appointment at a shop to bring it to which said that they can rebuild it. Rear end ended up exploding right as I pulled in, luckiest situation I could have hoped for I guess.
I'm not car savvy at all unfortuantly and everything they've told me doesn't make too much sense, other than I'm going to need to shell out some serious cash. It was a 10 bolt that I was just going to have rebuilt, but they're suggesting finding a 12 bolt would be cheaper.
He said he can order me a new rear from Jasper that will cost 2k, or I can search junk yards and see if somebody crashed their car recently. The problem is that this is my Daily driver and I'm so fucked without it for getting to classes and work.
From what I understand, he said it needs to be 3.23 ratio to 1 and the replacement has to have traction control or abs wont work.
I'm completely clueless here, anybody have some suggestions on what I should do?
Thanks

If you are going to have to shell out 2 grand for a 10 bolt, you might as well get a new 12 bolt from Moser or a 9". I wouldn't bother putting another 10 bolt in there. And it doesn't have to be 3.23's, you can go higher to 3.42s or 3.73s if you want. It depends on your goals for the car.

If it were me, I would not bother trying to find a 10 bolt from a junk yard. You never know what condition its in and the stock 10 bolt is junk anyways. Look into getting a 12 bolt or a 9" and never look back, its a blessing in disguise. If you are primarily looking to drive it on the street as a DD, I would go with 3.42s.

Probably stick with the 3.23 since it is your DD but definitely upgrade to a 12 bolt or 9". If you are going to check the yards try and bring someone who can tell the difference between the rears by eye so you dont get the wrong thing. Or you could just let the shop get one for you. There are some on the for sale threads here and ebay as well if you wanted to check those.

X4 on getting a 12 bolt. You should never have to worry about the rear end ever again with this, throw as power at it as you want.

you need to find out exactly what got damaged....you can find a replacement posi, axles or gears pretty cheap, especially used. thats the major components to the ten bolt. replace whats broke. i have a set of 3.23s that just came out of my car that are in perfect shape if you stripped gear teeth in yours.

I have a feeling just about everything will be replaced.
My buddy works at the shop thats going to be fixing it. Keep in mind I know next to nothing about this stuff, but he texted me: "carrier bearing got loose, stripped the drive ring, doesn't move under it's own power."
I'm not sure what that means, but I'm expecting to have to replace just about everything.
01ssreda4 I'll definatly keep that in mind thank you!

Thanks for all of the responses in here. I'm on a very tight budget and as much as I'd like to shell out 2,500 for a beefy 12 bolt, I'm going to find a used 10-bolt and hope to not be in a bad financial situation.
I baby my car always, so I'm not worried about not being able to come sideways out of every road. (as much as I'd love to)

defiantly just buy a used ten bolt. if you baby your car then a 10 bolt will not ever break but in your case it sounds like it broke just out of bad luck.
i feel you man i fucked up some **** in my rear because i was being stupid and slid the car into a curb so i bought a used axle for 35 dollars because mine was bent. i was without a car to school and work for two weeks because shipping took a while for some reason(my luck).
go to the parts wanted section and make a thread asking for a ten bolt just get one with the gears your car already has.
thats just my .02 cents

Now normally i would recommend a built 12 bolt or bigger (Overkill is a good thing), but in your situation, I agree with alot of the suggestions, see if you can pick up a good condition local 10 bolt. I dont know why it would cost 2k just to completely rebuild yours though. I had the stock 10 bolt rebuilt at a reputable shop here, for less than 1k. That included an Aubrun HP Posi, GM 3.73s, all new bearings and seals, and labor.

you can find used ones for 100-300 bux and you can get any ratio that you want, id look for one with 3.42's or 3.73's
there are two types of ABS set ups for fbodies 3 channel or 4 channel
you have a 4 channel rear seieng as it has traction control, you can get a 3 channel and just reuse your ABS hardware from the old rear so it doesnt matter which type you find.
Im in Nj and I have 3, 10 bolts sale pending on one, ones in teh car and th eother has 4.10's
