Default Gear and mod question

Ok my 98 Z has 2.73 gears in it. All the places here are saying I have to change my carrier to put 3.73 gears in it. Is that right? Also what are some good mods to do to the car? Im thinking about a SLP lid box. Is that a good start?

You can get aftermarket gears for the 2 series carrier. Make sure that's what's in there, mine came with 2.73's so GU2 is on the door - but replaced the entire rear with a M6 3.42 car. A lid is a good place to start.

I found a good one out of a 6 spd car for 120.00. Is that a good deal?

Do you know where it came from? Might be as long as it wasn't abused. I got mine from someone I knew who was upgrading to a 12 bolt. Something else to consider when swapping is whether your/donor car have ASR/TCS or not - ASR/TCS are 4 channel ABS, non ASR/TCS cars are 3 channel and only have one sensor on top of the pumpkin, traction control cars have sensors at each rear wheel.

On the SLP box Im seeing the priced at 3-4 hundred, where can I get one for 90.00? It has mid length headers with no cats and a borla muffler. Also who sales SLP gears and do they whine? All the shops around here are saying go with gear motive gears, because the others whine. Its a auto car, so I know the speedo will have to be reflashed, but what about a tune, with just the gears? All the shops here are saying I have to have it tuned as well.

I've never heard of an SLP Box? Post up a link to it. I've heard most 4.10 gears whine.

I meant lid. is it really worth it to put a lid on the car? I am going with 3.73 gears. Will they whine if I dont change my carrier?

you need to do some reading in the gears/axles section, lots of good info there. the quietest and most forgiving gears are GM aka SLP aka AAM. (all the same). Motive's are a bit stronger and some people have had noise but most haven't, so far i have had great luck. Richmond's are known to be the strongest and loudest. if you have 2.73s in your car now then 3.73s will be a huge eye opener and order the 2 series 3.73. its a bit thicker gear then the 3 series. basically the same just the thickness is different.
