Open headers question, please help!

Default Open headers question, please help!

So the other day i bottomed out on some train tracks and it hit so hard it pulled the Y pipe off the right header. I'm currently running open headers because of this.

My questions are:

Is it bad to run open headers?

For some reason it seems like the gas mileage is shitty now, could this be because of the open headers?

It also dosnt seem to have the the power as it did before. I used to be able to floor it at 25-30 mph and spin the tires, now it dosnt do it?

Also, someone told me that if you're running it hard with open headers and let off the gas quick then cool air goes up the header and ***** up your heads or valves?

I'm guessing you had your rear o2s removed already so that shouldn't be an issue or cause the bad mpg.

You will lose a bit of torque running open headers but it should help in the top end.

Just get another y-pipe....

Yea you wont spin the tires in 1st probably because you have alot of lowend torque lost. Just get a new Y and you'll be fine. You also will loose some mpg running open headers and yes you could mess up valves but thats if ur driving it open for along time and beating on it. Just take it easy until you get a Y

My father claims that you have to be careful running open headers because if yous shut it down and the cool air rushes to the head, you can warp it, and the valve stems. I have no way to confirm this, but my father has been working on cars for 30+ years so i trust his knowledge.

don't worry about could air going up your headers and getting to your heads. the air will be heated by the high temp of the tubes before it ever comes close to to heads. however, the upstream o2 sensors on long tubes are close to the end and, can mess up due to the air temp. i would recomend at least 12" of pipe between the o2 sensor and fresh air.

The whole heads warping thing is more of a dragster thing.... youll notice in like F1 cars, or top fuel dragsters, after they turn off, they shove these corks in their pipes
