Default Removing cats question

Hi guys, I currently have an SLP loudmouth-1 catback exhaust and I'm trying to remove my cats. Now, my question is do I have to replace it with an Xpipe? or just got out the cats. Yes, I'm a noob when it comes to this, so go easy on me. Any info is appreciated

You can just gut them, or somebody makes straight pipes that bolt right in place of the factory cats.

Please explain by "gutting" them? Can you provide me a link that has straight pipes also.

Gutting means getting all the stuff in the converter out. Depending on what type of cats you have you may can take them off and get a hard metal rod and knock everything on the inside out. But if they are creamic metallic then your going to have to cut them open to cut the stuff inside of them out. But when you take your cats off or gut them out, remember you have a Loudmouth exhaust system so your going to have alot of rasp and drone (basically popping and unwanted noises). I will be loud, an sound good at idle and WOT (wide open throttle) but anything other than that it's going to be annoying but you have to remember everybody is different. What I like you may not like and so fourth.

i had the muffler shop gut mine before, they cut em off and used a long rod and hammer to chip the inside of em out so they are just hollow, that way it looks like you have cats to pass inspection

Like I have said before, u are hurting performance by gutting your cats. A gutted cat causes turbulence due to uneven exhaust flow

Yep^ just ended up getting a MAC ory. Sounded like crap after. Cut a lot of rasp tho.

It's not hurting performance any over stock. A gutted cat isn't going to flow any worse that an non-gutted cat.

Though I agree that the gains will be very small at best. ORY is the better way to go.

Gutting the cats seems like too much of a hassle IMO. I would just wait and install longtubes and ory.

If your going to do all that work, just get longtube headers and ORY.. GAIN some power in the process instead of gutting it like most ricers do around here which is a LOSS in power. And as pointed above, get the fake cat shells if you need to pass inspection

Again, gutted cats will not rob HP over non-gutted cats. But you won't really gain anything either, other than sound.

Its obvious a gutted cat doesn't flow any worse than a non-gutted cat. It's less restrictive in a way, but think of it this way, the honeycomb ceramics inside of a cat DO play a role in exhaust flow. Flow is very straight. Now, think of a gutted cat as an un-uniformed chamber. The exhaust gases bounce around the inner walls of the gutted cat causing uneven exhaust flow. It may not 'rob' hp, but think of it this way, compare a gutted cat, non-gutted cat, and ORY. Not a MAJOR difference in the 3, but sorry to bust your bubble, power is affected, even in a 'microscopic' amount. My 2 cents

1st, who could measure "microscopic" amounts of power? You can't trust dyno results down to that level, so it's almost impossibile to prove. 2nd, the amount of turbulace created inside the empty cat shell is probably no more harmful to power that the amount of backpressure created by the cat material blocking potential flow in the first place. It probably equals out. 3rd, there can be a pretty major difference when going to an ORY depending on your mod level.

I highly doubt gutted cats on a stock car really make or lose any power lol. But, I can vouch for the fact that it VASTLY improves the sound of a stock exhaust. I'd imagine it might cause rasp with an LM1 though.

Just like a mod that only increases 5hp. It isn't gonna be noticeable. Your not gonna feel it. My point was is that an ORY generally FREES up around 5-10hp. Not something to really give that 'seat of the pants' difference. As in power differences in gutted v. non-gutted. Yes, with extensive mods, a mod (ORY for example) which doesn't generate a whole lot of extra power is very beneficial, especially where every hp and every pound lost in weight counts

I recently put LT and ORY...along with an e-cutout and Magnaflow CB.
