i have never once looked for a shop to do one thing on my car. And never will. And besides, Doing a gear swap isnt rocket science. And you aren't special bc you know how to do them.

neither are you...so quit acting like you are and everyone else can do them, and its as simple as changing oil, because its not.

That's enough guys, take it to PM if you want to fight.

IMO, a gear swap is not for beginners. I have no clue how skilled the OP is, but unless he's got some level of mechanical assembly/installation experiance, I would not suggest to start with a gear swap.

im not saying it cant be done yourself, im just saying its not an easy task to take on. and if you get it wrong your gonna spend that much more on a new set of gears because most distributors ask for a receipt from a certified mechanic for warranty claims. if your tech savy then go at it. it helps to have some1 thats done it before if you wanna do it yourself though.

at that point, if they are infact 2.73's, i would hunt for another rearend totally, that way gears are cheaper and more abundant, and you have a bigger selection. also, you wont have to mess with a gear swap or paying a shop to do it. you can pick up a nice 3.42 rear for about 300 bucks, and probably off load yours for half that since its less deseriable 2 series carrier.

sometimes you gotta pay, but there are shops out there that will do it for about 100 bucks, and do it right.

wow this thread blew up! i posted right before left for work, i get back, and its 2 pages haha. tons of great advise AND a fight!

unless the predator tuner is wrong it should be 2.73 in there. and i did put in my tire size too, so the speedo should be dead on now.i was going the same speed as trafic the whole time but i havent had the chance to have someone follow me and tell me how fast THEY are going. ive been wanting to turn the rear tires and count the driveshaft go round, but i never think of it untell after i just get done lowering the car and stand back up. im going to do that asap

i would MUCH rather put the gears in myself! but this is my daily driver and i really cant have it on jack stands for too long just in case i do mess somthing up, so unless i find someone that can look over my sholder the whole time i might just take it to a shop. im very new to the "do it yourself" attitude haha.

at 70mph im at 1200rpm in 6th

at 35mph im at 1500 in 3rd
(this is all with the speedo tuned to 2.43 gear ratio)

hope that answers all the questions about my little problem. your all a great help!! thanks

with these rears u would be better off buying a whole rear ive picked up a 3.42 for i think 150 and a 3.73(that broke) for 125. and keep the rear you have in there now as a spare. this would probally cost about the same or cheaper than buying a gear and having it installed.

you mean 2.73's right? no such thing as a 2.43 in these rear ends.

would swapping the rear end be easier than changing gears? any how to's? that does sound a lot cheaper, maybe i will have to think about it. the only problem is, i dont know where i would store a spare rear end. i have no room.

It would be for me but for somebody with the tools and experience swapping gears would be easier......

throw it out in the back yard. its not like an engine that has to be stored inside. it lives under the car, it will survive under a tree.
