If the trans is slipping on gear changes, that's your problem. It should not be doing that.

How many miles on the car? How long the auto will last is very dependant on driving styles and maintenance routines.....some guys have stock 4L60Es doing great at 130k miles, others have them fail at 50k miles.

From what you've described, unfortunetly it does not sound like something simple. Sounds like that trans needs to be sorted out. If the cats were that badly clogged, or fuel pressure/fuel flow was that poor, you'd have several other issues (besides gear change hesitation) with the engine/starting/driveability and/or codes showing.

You have checked for stored codes, correct? That's the very first thing I'd say to do if you haven't already. Sometimes a gummed up MAF can cause shifting weirdness, but yours sounds to be more serious. You could try cleaning the MAF just incase.

Since you stated it is in fact a LS1. . . . It does sound like something is really wrong.

Like mentioned above, get into the basics. . . Check everything.

The AT should not slip at all between gears.

when i had my lt1, it ran a 16 something with a bad slipping tranny at wot. A bad tranny would def cause those horrible times just get it rebuilt if thats the problem and run it again.

It's not that it feels like it slips or anything. It's more like the car falls over. Then comes back up. Like the power is cut off sorta. Kinda hard to describe unless you drive it. It doesn't feel like something mechanical more like electrical. I'm gonna get trans checked out as well as cutting cats and plugs and wires. I was looking at plugs and wondered if there any special tools required for this? The passenger side looks horrible to get to.

There is no special tool to change the plugs. But it is difficult. I was gonna say clean your maf, but that shouldn't matter at wide open throttle at the track cause the PCM wouldn't run off the maf and would run on a preset setting.

it has 8 coil packs with 8 spark plugs. i am actually a very good mustang mechanic. my other car is a 600rwhp procharged 95gt that i do all the work on myself. actually it has a fast dual sensor wideband 02 system that I'm going to put on this to see if fuel is the problem. On mustangs you can remove factory 02s and put wideband in that bung for testing without any issues. Will these cars do ok with the factory 02 unplugged for this purpose or will the computer do something stupid. thanks again. don't bash me too much because i have a mustang as well. believe it or not you guys did have me questioning myself. I did go look under the hood to verify it was a V8. lol

cleaned the mass air meter. it was covered with bugs. also pcv hose was melted by egr. replaced that as well. runs much better no more hesitation on gear changes. i'm going to the track this weekend if it doesn't rain. hopefully much better times. i'll let you know. also had trans checked out filter and fluids changed. everything was good with trans.

It's gotta be the tranny. I presume you checked the fluid and vacuum line...

It's the tranny or your floor mat is stuffed under your gas pedal.
