Default Help in cali!!!

Hello all my name is jt I am a us marine and I am about to seperate after 8 years of service. I just recently bought a 1998 z28 t-top camaro and I plan on modding it but the only problem is that I live in california. I am sure all of you know that California has the strictest laws on pollution and thus modding your car past factory can get you into alot of problems with the law and DMV. The only option that I can successful pull off is to supercharge my ls1 for the horsepower gains that I want. What supercharger should I go with, what parts do I need in order to make it successul besides engine stuff (sway bars, exhaust etc) and still keep it smog legal? I honestly ony want under 500 horses so a big turbo isn't necessary and I don't have the money to blow through parts as well (the other reason why I don't want a big turbo) please help me with the logisitics! Thanks all!!!

Hey man, I'm down in SD. I have the same issues you are. Heres some things that are legal:

- P1SC kit (D1 is NOT legal last I knew)
-One of the vortech kits
- STS rear mount turbo
- AFR 205 heads
- Short tube headers that have the smog hookups
- SLP LS6 manifold with EGR will get past smog no problem.

I'm going with the AFR 205 / cheatr cam combo from thunder racing. Its proven to make 380-400rwhp through the stock manifolds and thats all I am wanting, and it is much cheaper and safer than FI on a stock motor. I'll be adding the SLP LS6 intake when I find one for a good price, they are a rip off if you buy it new. Hope this helps you out a little. You can try to play games swapping 243 heads on and such, but at the end of the day if you get a sharp smog guy or have to go to the ref, you will end up paying.

A&A Corvette makes one of the best supercharger packages. They are located in Valencia just about 2 hours north of you. I know of a lady who put one of their systems on her LS1 Corvette and made 490 rwhp. I don't think 500 rwhp is possible legally.

I Just installed the cheatr cam and underdrive pulley in my 98 and it was a worthwhile upgrade. I am in Ca as well.

As far as other modifications go, are you looking for a car that handles well? If so.. you should look at the koni/strano set up. That was the first thing I did to my car and I love it.

@ Tom I also want the suspension to be exellent as well. What's the point of having a fast car that handles like crap? What suspensions options are more geared toward street use?

After doing some reading over the past couple weeks I have seen so many people say "yeah, a cheatr cam will pass CA smog" but I have yet to see anyone say "yes, I have a cheatr cam and i HAVE passed CA smog".

JT, I'm up here in Fallbrook, looking to do the same thing to my car. I've got a dry shot setup instead of the supercharger.

Is there a brand of headers you guys would reccomend?

Where can I find an LS6 intake on the cheap?
