Default Add HP first or drivetrain?

I've got 10k on my Z and think its time to add some more performance. I can't do both at the same time because of cash flow. Should I build the motor first or get a rear. I know it makes sense to do the drivetrain first, but I really want more power and sound. Then again I would love to have 4.10's.

My engine plans are moderate cam, LT's, pulley and tune. My drivetrain build up will be a rear, ds, TQ arm and new clutch when needed.

Thanks.

Get a 12bolt with 4.30s, that will be plenty of fun.

if you plan to do a lot of runs at the track invest in the 12 bolt and gears now.

I think the gears make the most sense. 4.30's should be a blast on the street.

seems to me like it would make since to do the drivetrain first, just to save yourself some trouble down the road

Go with the horsepower. Some stock rearends last along time with 400 or less hp. Fix it when it breaks.

I say get some HP first, when the rear breaks deal with it then. That's what I'm doing.

nice when you have a beater or another car to drive, not good when you really need your vehicle.

life doesnt stop when your car breaks

I subscribe to the "do it right the first time" theory, so IMO drivetrain comes first - especially true when its your DD like jrp mentioned. An old timer once told me that you build a hot rod powertrain from back to front and I tend to think that's good advice. If nothing else you will minimize the time spent on the flatbed

i say if its not broke dont fix it....try to get your moneys worth out of your 10'' first. get some long tubes, maybe a cam, first and have fun with the power for a while. id say throw some 4:10 gears in there, and a nice TA cover, and id bet it would last a long time.....unless your running slicks and launching at 5K....
you will love a set of 4:10 gears...there awsome!

Well I'm at the minus 9K in the spending department compared to you, but my long range plan is a bit more horsepower. I've decided I do not want jerry rigged torque multiplication or numerically higher gears, I want all of the attibutes of stock plus faster acceleration at any speed. Expensive but well engineered heads and a mild duration, and lobe separation angle cam, with high lift seems what I am looking for, from a novice point of view, as I am not a wrencher and don't know a lot, but trying to learn . My goal 370 RWHP with no emission passing problems and all the driving charactistics of stock. Really would like to have a 110+ trap speeds, that would make me happy.
Regards,

those goals are quite simple and oh so easily obtainable.

it means you like the hp the big cams are putting out but are more practical and will go with a 220-224 114 duration

means ditch the wife or spend $3K to upgrade her *****, which may delay your car mod money!

i like just mid-sized, and thats what i rock out.

Although I'm an M6, I trapped 109.8 with just an exhaust... 110+ trap speeds are definitely in the books for ya...
