Default torque converter?

just curious, how could you tell if you had an aftermarket torque converter in your car? suppose the previous owner put one in and it wasnt mentioned during the process of selling/buying the car. im sure a 3600 plus stall would be totally noticeable but would a 2800 stall be noticeable? what would be some giveaways as to the size of your stall if you didnt already know?

A 2800 would definitely be noticable after driving a stocker. With the brakes on and the gas wooded, 1500 rpm is about max.

sorry for a thread jack but sense were on the subject of torque converters

whats the difference between locked and unlocked? and if you have a 3800 stall does that mean if your stopped at a stoplight and when it turns green does the stall carry the rpm up to 3300 before you go?

locked feels like youre driving normal. no it will only take a couple hundred more rpm to get the car moving.

no. that number you are referring to is the "flash stall", or the RPM where the converter will roughly end up if you go WOT. you want to have this matched to where your car makes its peak torque IIRC. That way you're already in your powerband when you take off.

a good converter will drive almost like normal until you start to get into it.

my custom edge converter was the missing link with my GMPP 350HO. really woke the car up and brought the package together. Doesn't have the top end of my Z28, but will sure leave the hole hard.
