Default Old school learning new school

First time posting here. I want to read/learn more about the GenIII and GenIV engines. All I've ever done is the first gen small blocks and now I want to try something new. Where can I find out about these engines? Example Head numbers (L92, 317)different blocks LS1, LS2, LQ4 and 5300 vortec and so on. Where to look on the engines for numbers of what engine it is and so forth. I go to alot of wrecking yards and swap meets and I want to be able to know what I'm looking at. Thanks everyone Darrin

There is a search feature on this site, and if you use is it, you will find everything you need.

Yeah, screw the books. There is nothing in them that
wasn't here first. The only upside is somebody organized
it all in a line.

I will say that using this site will keep you up to date with the most current LSx Tech BUT be mindful there are tons of mis information as well. Stick with the Stickies and just search poking around.

There are some VERY useful books out there. Do a Amazon Search for Chevrolet LS1 or something like that. There was back in the day the LS1/LS6 Chevrolet Performance (the white book) but so much time has passed, tons of that info is now even irrelevant but still useful as a starter.

Block # tends to be toward the back, near the driver side head which is what your going to definitly want to shoot for and even then you still want to send it out to be checked. Blocks can be cracked easily and Cyl walls may require resleeve.
