Default 98 ls1 new purchase

looking into buying a 98 camaro ls1 with a knock, posibble rod knock, and the guys says the rod bearing needs replaced.
1. What am i possibly getting into?
2. Would it be safe to drive about 20 miles back home?

Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks

The first question are:

1. What are you paying for it?
2. What are your plans for it?

x2 on what your paying for it?

I wouldnt drive it anywhere with a knock. If something lets go it could trash the block, heads, crank, etc...

NO way would I pay $4K for a 98 with a bad motor unless it has really low miles. Is it a stick or auto? Because even if you do a stock rebuild you are looking at around $1500 or more to rebuild it.

i would definitely NOT make that purchase. Sounds like a car that might have problems, after problems.

I pretty much made a very similar purchase two years ago when I got my 99 Z28. I got it from a guy who purchased it from the original owner who spun a rod bearing. The second owner who purchased it parked it while he planned out what to do. Like most projects, he never started and just let it sit until I purchased it from him. I paid $4000 for it back in June 2009 and I got it running for around $1300. Mine was in good condition other than the motor so it was worth it to me. If the car is a junker with a blown motor then I'd probably steer clear.

That's a pretty good price, even for the mainland. I paid $7400 for mine in the midwest.

Don't bother with a handheld, waste of money. Wait until you have a good amount of mods then get it dyno tuned. I had lid, ls6 intake, longtubes, and true duals before I got tuned. Those are good starting mods too. There are thousands of "good starting mod threads for you to look through.
