All depends on what you want out of your engine. How many miles are on the engine? There are alot of ppl on here running nitrous on stock bottom ends from what I read.

i would leave the crank stock and get rods and pistons. iirc TSP has made over 1000hp with a stock crank 347.

176k miles strong as an ox, I would only need rods and pistons?

Again what do you want to do for the future? What are your horsepower/build/times goals? What cam and numbers do you have now? I run a 150 shot and make over 600 rwhp on a 100% stock 99 shortblock LS1 with 80k miles. Are you just wanting to freshen up the motor or build it stronger for racing/cruising/touring/dragging?

I'd be more worried about the A4 trans than I would the LS1 if you plan on using nitrous.

Oh man, if you're thinking about building a motor get ready to crack open your checkbook. Start doing a TON of research and figure out what all you need. Figure at a minimum:

-Machine work (most expensive part)
-Pistons (probably domed or flat topped for nitrous)
-Rods
-Lifters
-Upgraded valve springs
-Hardened pushrods
-Complete gasket kit for your motor
-ARP head studs or bolts
-New head gaskets
-Lifter trays
-Upgraded rockers
-Timing chain
-Motor mounts
-Oil pump

I know I'm missing a ton of stuff. Also, you'll think of about 50 other "might as well" items while you're in there.

In no way am I trying to discourage you from doing this, I'm just saying it's way more involved than most people realize. I'm a hell of a lot farther financially into this than I had ever planned on, even though I have done all of the labor myself with the exception of the machine work. I would recommend you pick up a copy of this book...

It's fantastic and I would read it cover to cover a couple times to get a head start on educating yourself.
