Anyone here running a paper filter w/ their aftermarket lid? I stuck with ACDelco because I new it would seal. Thats one Im going to use with my new SLP lid.

fram works for me. don't ever use fram oil filters though; they weren't designed quite as well.

I have K&N and have no problems with my SLP lid.

According to some people the paper filter would actully flow better than the K&N, but not by much.

I also run a FRAM air filter, I change it every time I do an oil change. I remember someone posting a dyno graph, he gained 1 RWHP after he removed his FRAM air filter and redynoed it. So at least on his car - it was working pretty good. I have an SLP lid and it seals fine. A friend of mine has a 2000 WS6 car w/ a direct flow lid, seeing how funky his lid fit w/ a K&N made me stick w/ a paper filter.

it's not so much the flow between the two that determines why a paper filter is better. the k&n actually does not trap as much debris coming in through the intake. also, the oil on the filter gets sucked into the intake as well. neither of those events, simultaneously or independently, are good for any engine.

Thanks guys. Eventhough my car has 600miles on it I went to the dealer and got a brand new AcDelco for the car. My new SLP lid should be here on Tues. I have heard many times that the K&N does not seal and most importantly not trapping dirt like it should. I also heards that guys are doing just fine with the stock paper. I guess the paper straightens the air path better than the oil filled ones.

I never use Fram oil filters. Those are the worst. I only will use AcDelco or Mobil one oil filters.

Patman, if you read this post you finally got me to see things your way about the oil/cotton air filters!

I just switched back to a Fram paper filter after finding way more dirt/dust on my MAF screen than I should have after using a Holley PowerShot for about 7K miles. I notice zero difference in how the car pulls. I'm sure there was no horsepower loss at all....

Good man! The K&N air filter doesn't give you much, if any horsepower, but yet lets in a lot more dirt. Nothing beats a Fram or AC Delco paper air filter for dirt trapping ability! Both of them have shown very low dirt ingestion on my oil analysis reports.

Yep, you were totoally right Patman

I really didn't think the cotton filters allowed that much dirt in, but I was wrong! I checked the seal/fit on my lid for leaks anywhere, and there were none, so all that fine dirt/dust on my MAF had apperently come through the fliter.....

A few years ago, people used to claim that Fram were the best flowing paper air filters on the market, while still trapping as much dirt as any other. Was there really any truth to this? I mean, do you think the Fram actually flows any better than say an AC Delco? Probably nothing measureable anyway.....

What about an AMSOIL filter? Any different from the others?
Thanks for the help.

I have my K&N collecting dust in the garage. I found sand up by my MAF and it would never seal 100% with the lid. Been using FRAMs and throwing them away at every other oil change with good results. My K&N is up for grabs too, if anyone wants it...

FWIW, I dyno'd 3hp more with the stock filter removed, back to back dyno runs. Couldn't be more than a 2hp gain from using those filters, which don't trap dirt as well.

When I trash the K&N should I take the K&N gasket that is on the Lid off or leave it with the paper filter?

Of the filters I tested, the Purolator was the best cheapo
in terms of pressure drop (second only to the Donaldson
Blackwing and better than Fram or the OEM that came
with the car). I didn't test a foam filter.
