Default Air lid question.

Alright, by what i understand (and don't get me wrong i might not fully) the only difference between the stock air lid and any aftermarket air lid is that an aftermarket air lid wont have the grooves in the top of the inside. -At risk of sounding like a total cheapskate- cant i just dremel the grooves off and smooth it down with some 600 grit sandpaper? i could save 95-100 bucks on a lid and put it toward a pair of Borla Xr-1 mufflers, or do i have to put up the money for a nice lid?
-basic question- cant i just smooth the top of the lid myself to make it basically like any other after market one?

any input would be nice, especially if you've gone and done the same. thanks!

Would it help? Sure... But the entire design/size/shape of say an SLP/whisper/etc is better than stock.

You can find them all day long for 60$ shipped.

The stock lid also has the what I think is called a silencer (big bulb thing right behind the lid). This also restricts flow and aftermarket lids don't have them.

Could be worth a try going through with your idea but I think it would be way to much trouble. Try and find a used lid if money is an issue.

Edit: and not having said silencer makes working on your car easier. Doing something as simple as changing a belt is sooo much easier having all that space opened up.

Yes, the entire design is different.

Stock lid has places for air to get "stuck".

If i end up doing it in my free time before my next paycheck ill post if it makes a difference or not. also where do you find them for 60 shipped? just places like ebay and craigslist? im on the local CL postings every day but no one sells anything but the stock ones.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/marketplace/parts/search/

most activity and thread bumps are first thing in the morning.. around 5pm and 6 and around 10pm. Check in every day at those times or just search though the first few pages every other day or so. Good deals go quick so you have to watch know what you want and be ready to send payment.

I wouldn't waste time on the stock one honestly.. You would never feel that difference.

I would ****** this.. 75$ isn't bad at all.
Patient and you will find out for less though.

The ridges are the least of the issues that holds back airflow with the stock lid. The bigger issues are the silencer and the poorly blended oval-to-round merge of the stock lid, getting rid of these is where the most gains are to be found.
