Our Advance Auto carries the Comp Cams break-in oil. I've used Auto Zone for my initial firing oil (Valvoline conventional) and 1,000 miles break-in oil (Valvoline VR-1 racing conventional) in the past just because they always seemed to have it on sale when I needed it.
I don't rebuild that many engines; however, the local shops that do recommended I have at least 1,000-1,500 miles
on the engine before switching to synthetic. The VR-1 has high levels of phosphorous (1300 ppm)/zinc (1400 ppm) with some detergent according to their product data sheet.
Hope this helps!
