So your saying if I get the ls1 heads and just get them ported with bigger valves and run my springs it should make the same gains?

It's difficult to say with so little info to go on! What ls1 heads does he have, who's doing the port and valve work, what springs do you have and what other mods do you have already??

Depends on what you consider "bang for your buck" To me a set of ported 243s are the best backdoor gang bang...but for a 100$ sure why not.

Very much so. But what people are getting at is that $100 is a great deal for ls1 heads. Are they 853's or 241's?

Yes they do, by a lot actually.

Get the 243 castings and don't look back!

If you want bang for buck, companies like Advanced Induction have a program to make a ported ls1 head flow right at what a ported ls6 head does. So you get basically the same performance but don't have the $300-500 expense of buying the ls6 heads.

Not sure on flow numbers, but I do know AI's 243's will make more power than their 241's. It even says it on their website.

With a 243 casting you have more room to grow compared to an 853/241. Definitely worth the extra coin in my opinion.

Do some research on the Advanced Induction High Compression 241 program.

They will come within 8-12rwhp of the AI 243. Yes, the 243 are better...but it just depends on what you have to pay for the 243/799. From what I hear deals aren't as easy to come by.

As far as room to grow, once the heads are ported they are done either way and you get what you get. Putting stock 243/799s on is a waste of time (IMO) so I am not taking that into account.

I have argued for the 243s before, like I said it all comes down to what kind of deal you can find on 243/799 cores and then comparing that to a ~10rwhp gain.

That's exactly what I was insinuating with my original response. Nothing more, nothing less. For what you can pick up a set of 243 heads for it only makes sense imo.

What I meant by room to grow is if the OP ever decided to go with a more stout setup (I.e. bigger cubes) the 243's will work fine, as I've seen numerous LS6-headed 402/408's putting down 500+rw SAE. For the small difference in price I see no reason why not to go with their 243 program.

Now you have me curious as to exactly how much of a difference there is between their HCR 219cc 241's versus their 226/232cc 243's on a 3.9" bore. Just waiting on Phil to return my call.

So I got a response from Phil @ AI. He pretty much confirmed what I already knew.

My question:
1) Does your HCR 219cc 241 (LS1) casting heads make the same power to your 232cc 243 (LS6) castings?

2) Will there be a significant difference between the two heads in the area "under the curve" in a similar setup?

3) What's the max rwhp you've seen for both HCR 219cc 241's and your 226cc/232cc 243's?

His response:
1. Nope, the 243/799 inherently has more potential than the LS1 style heads. The 232cc 243/799 or 317 (we can add material to the chambers & convert to 243 style chamber for +$150) is generally always going to be 15-25hp better assuming your inlet/exh don’t restrict you.

2. 243/799 tends to make more power everywhere.

3. On an LS1 346 with the usual ~23Xdeg HR cams guys run the HCR is going to usually do 440-460rwhp and the 232cc 243/799 head should be more like 460-485.

Looks like the HP difference from their HRC 241 vs 226/232 LS6 head is more like 20-25.

Get their 243's and don't look back!
