Default Cam / Converter Opinion

Hello,

I am looking for opinions/options for a cam and converter. I am getting a Comp Cam for free so all other cam companies are not an option.

The car is street driven but I do like to play around and go fast. I need it to be reliable and able to make long trips and be able to sit in traffic.

Here are the details:

- 1957 BelAir - 3100lbs
- Manual Brakes
- 2004 LQ4 with 317 heads and truck intake, all stock
- 4L80E with stock converter for now
- 9" with 3.55 gear, 4 Link & coil-overs
- Cold Air Intake
- Long Tube Headers
- 2.5" Dual Exhaust
- Will have a custom tune

Looking at a 3200 Converter

Cam -
54-446-11

Let me know your thoughts and choices

Thanks
Rob

Is it a shelf cam only or a custom Comp?

how do i get in on that free cam gig? i currently have the 2002 ls6 cam which is very mellow. im really a street only cruising type guy so the tr224 is generally a terrific med street cam i wish i'd picked. you might look at 228 if you want a little better dyno #s. dont forget better springs with any cam upgrade. im sure ls1 tech sponsors like circle D will be glad to give you a stall recommendation. i enjoyed a q&a on yanks website. most articles i've read say you shouldnt go under 3k stall with an ls1. the board guys seem to like 3600.

Off the shelf cam only.

Someone I know won a Comp Cam give away from a local shop, he doesn't need a cam so he gave it to me.

I will upgrade the springs, pushrods and rocker arm trunnion

Okay. Well I'd do either of these for a streetable option (with a 3200 stall):

54-428-11 228/230 .571"/.573" 112 LSA

54-458-11 227/235 .614"/.621" 113 LSA

You have the 6L but low compression. If you go too big with the cam, you'll have a dog down low. And too big will also compromise the street qualities.

Further, I got you away from the XE-R series as they are more designed for drag racing. The lobes are harder on parts. The LSR (LSL lobes) and Xtreme High RPM (XE lobes) are milder, with the XE lobes being very mild and more suitable to a cruiser. The trade-off is a little bit of power, but more reliability. I'd probably go with the 228/230 112 as it will perform well in a stock headed 6L with a 3200 stall.

say jake that first cam looks like something i'd be interested in someday. i know the ls6 springs are only good for 570 lift but could i get away with that in your opinion? (sorry 4 the thread jack). how does that cam idle? (what rpm & rpm w foot on brake) where does that cam make peak horsepower? i dont really like to spin much over 6k. thx

Do not try to use GM springs with aftermarket cams. There is more to matching springs and cam than lift capacity, aftermarket lobes are more aggressive.

Agreed. Use some quality beehives with XE lobes and you'll be fine.

I had the Comp 54-428-11 228/230 .571"/.573" 112 LSA in an LS1 with cheap long tubes and a 3600 converter it made 391rwhp 369rwtq with stock 241 heads. When I added the pocket ported 243 heads it made 400rwhp 390rwtq. The cam is more tame than you would think it would be. You could daily drive this cam all day long if you wanted. Here is a short vid of the wife running it at the track last year.

She ran a 12.05 with a shitty 60 (5 year old drag radials). Not bad for her first couple of runs. I can't wait to see what it can do this year with all of the changes that we made over the winter. It's very similar to your build.
