Default Choosing aftermarket heads

I need some help choosing an upgraded head for my LS1 FRC Corvette. I've been searching for awhile and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the information.

This is primarily a street car with some roadcoursing thrown in. What I'd like to see is mid-400whp once all is said and done while having a good idle and being streetable. Only bolt ons I have currently are LG headers and intake but planning on a LS6 intake manifold.

I come from the world of turbos where you just port the stock head and you're ready to roll. I've never had to worry about runner volume and combustion chamber sizes.

So far the only thing I've loosely decided is I want to use a torquer v2 cam http://www.texas-speed.com/p-1149-te...-camshaft.aspx

Feel free to make comments on my cam choice as I'm not certain that's the best cam for what I want, it's just the most fitting cam I can tell from my searching.

Now, on to the heads:

SO many options. Right now I'm split between AFR 215cc heads and worked over 243/799 heads. Some questions/thoughts:
  • AFRs have 64cc chambers, so I'd gain no compression ratio over an LS6. I'd like to stay on pump gas, but I'm pretty sure 92-93 can handle a bit more compression. I plan to use .040" head gaskets, so this would need a bit of milling, right? How do I decide how much?
  • Can I go bigger than 215cc without losing a bunch of low end torque?
  • 799s are MUCH cheaper. How much HP will I really be leaving on the table going with them? This isn't necessarily a budget build, but budget conscious thread.
  • Am I expecting too much from the stock LS1 short block?

Any extra info is welcome. If someone has either of these setups with dyno graphs, I'd love to see them.

Before I comment on the heads I see you're in Howell, and so am I. I'm right across from Krogers. How about you?

Cool! We should meet up in the spring. I actually had the Torquer 2 cam on my old LS1 with the PRC 5.3 heads that I have, and it was a great combo IMO. How much are you wanting to spend on heads?

I haven't really established a budget. After tune, timing chain, head gaskets and everything, I expect it to be around $4k. But if I can save a grand with the 799 heads and be in the same power range, why not?

Gotcha. The ported 243/799 option is hard to beat for the money. If it were me I'd go that route and use the extra money on suspension or tires. You could even do a simple nitrous kit and make huge power for little money

I guess that's why I posed the question: how much HP am I really leaving on the table AFR vs 799?

Out of the box AFR 215's compared to ported LS6 heads, I'm guessing not much difference if the LS6 heads are done right
