Question Connector Rod punch out

Greetings everyone. I have an 01 Z28 and for some reason, one of the connector rods, decided to punch a hole, in the side of my block, when starting the other night.
Did a wrist pin break, I wonder??
Anyway, I will have to pull the motor, sometime this winter, and start the rebuilding process.
My question is this: Has anyone ever welded (or had weld) the hole punched in the side of the block??
Thx

There is likely more damage than just a hole in the block, When a rod breaks it tends to destroy that cylinder also. Cost wise it's cheaper to replace the block rather than fix it. In your case, It's probably going to be cheaper and easier to just replace the engine.

Just curious, Did it happen to have rained recently before you started the car?

I've seen old Iron blocks repaired, but those were industrial and had new liners put in. I've never seen an automotive block repaired after getting punched out by the sneaky gremlin that lives inside.

I see aftermarket blocks repaired often but that's because the cost to replace them is much greater than the cost of the repair. OEM blocks just aren't worth putting the money into.

Ya I wouldn't bother repairing. It's possible but not easy or advised imo. I see used Ls1 blocks on Craigslist for $300

Understand and agree.
This is going to require a new motor, I know.
Just wondering if anyone has had success in welding a block up.
YES, this happened while it was raining.
Why do you ask??
Thx.

I have a buddy that is a certified welder, and he has welded cast aluminum for me in the past, with success.
But he or I do not know, if welding the hole in the block up, would work, or be very smart, in the long run.
I have to pull the motor out first, and then he will take a look at it.
I'm just trying to figure out, an economical way, to do this.
Thx.

MY_2K_Z :Understand and agree, to some extent.
I haven't checked Craigslist yet, but will do soon, shortly.
My experience has been, its easy to get burned there, however.
Thx.

The reason I asked about the rain, What likely happened is water leaked past the cowl onto the top of the engine. It then makes it's way into the engine because the intake gaskets don't seal that well over time. The water fills a cylinder or two. When you try to crank the engine over the water can't compress so it breaks the connection rod.

As far as repairing the engine, The damage is likely going to more than the hole in the block. It most likely ruined the bore that the rod used to reside in. In simple terms, repairs are likely to cost more than finding another engine.

WOWZER!!! That's some thinking going on there!!
Had no idea, that could even happen!!
I am assuming, it wouldn't take but a ml. or two, of water, to make this happen??
Thanks!!

It's happened to a few people on this forum, I imagine it's happened to a lot of people over the years.

Best way to get out cheap is to get a lq4 from the junkyard for a couple hundred bucks. Swap over your intake, oil pan and accessories. Then get a tune. You can swap out the oil pump or cam or whatever other stuff you want while it's out. In the end you'll get a few more cubes for the same price as just replacing the block.

ditto on the rain water entering the motor causing it to go boom. File an insurance claim and get a new motor paid for.

An LQ4 is a 6.0 liter iron block truck engine that will bolt right in place of your LS1 5.7 Liter engine. You'll have to reuse your oil pan/intake/front accessories.

COOL!!! Will start investigating this!!!
Is there a way, to prevent this rain thing, other than just leaving it in the garage, when it might rain??
(Everytime that I've had trouble with this car, it was during rain, or very damp weather.)

Thanks so much, everyone!!!
