Your mechanic is talking about ignition timing and you are talking about cam timing. Two different things. I also hope your mechanic knows what a distributor is.
What year/type car do you have? And what is your mechanic actually doing to it?

Cam and crank sensors only report the position(s) to the computer for injector and ignition timing respectively. The cam and crank need to be orientated correctly before you start the motor. Being fuel injected doesn't preclude you from having a distributor either, at least on older cars. Newer cars tend to have distributorless ignitions.
I would find it really hard to believe that your mechanic doesn't already know this.
