Default Help

Ok, as most of you know from my header post im having problems after the install. I am running much worse after the install and most people have said i need a tune. well i have found out that there are no places remotely close to get a tune . It also cost like $500 , i dont want to go to all that trouble with the few mods i have. I need a stall b4 i get a tune.

Anyone have any ideas of anything else that could be wrong b4 i go to all the trouble of getting tune and having to get another in like 6 months.

I just want to make sure i need a tune 1st. I mean i am running .3-.4 tenths slower than i was before. Can me running very lean effect my times this much??? They way i see it i should run like .3 tenths faster w/ headers so i would have to pick up .6 tenths total. That takes a lot of hp.

Would the timing tricker work? maft? diablo?

Im having the exact same problem! I was running a lot of 14.4's (You will all say shitty times anyway, but im at 5000' and a crappy track, Im sure u understand) and after my headers...i was running 14.8s!! I hope some1 shines in on this. Most people said I need a tune as well, but i dont want to spend 500 bucks for a tune just for installing headers. I was thinking about using a MAFT as a bandaid as well.

Are any of you setting any SES codes off? If you are then go get those scanned at autzone. I wouldn't think you would be running lean after a header install. From what i believe is that you run richer then you were before the header install.

Is it idling rough? Have you changed spark plugs? Checked to make sure all the plug wires are on the spark plugs?

I checked to see if all mine are connected properly, which they were. I had replaced my spark plugs about 3000 miles before the header install. No rough idle for me. I do have a code though, but Im just assuming its because I dont have my rear 02s plugged in and im not running my cats.. Ill get it scanned though. Im also getting a weird popping sound coming from the drivers side.

no ses light for me except of course the rear o2s which is normal. i did change my spark plugs to ngk tr 55s gapped at .50 like jrp said. I checked the plugs for cracks and made sure that the wires were on there good.

I wouldnt mind really getting a tune except i have to drive to texas! I really dont have the time or that would be ok too.

Im confused about the rich or lean part. I have seen rich and lean and the computer things lean so it makes ur rich and bla bla.

If you aren't absolutely sure what codes are being set off then go get them scanned. Even if it is your rear o2's it could be masking another code that you have no idea about.

As for the popping sound for Redlinels1, when does the popping sound happen. Have you had the hood open and can you pinpoint the area where it's coming from? It could be a leak at the header flange. Thats definitely not a good thing. I'm not sure if that will affect performance to to a degree where you are losing lots of time at the track.

How did you go about tightening the header bolts? Did you torque them down with a torque wrench?

Mine was popping really bad at first but that was a cracked spark plug. I fixed all that now.

I am sure it was the o2s because i had az scanned.

I didnt torque them down with a torqure wrech but i did get them tight. I dont hear any leaks and i run some water over them when the engine was just cranked ( it was cool , so i didnt break anything i hope) and i had no bubbles anywhere.

I expected to have to get a tune for maximum performance but i expected to run at least a tenth faster and never ever imagined slowing down .3+ tenths.

Thanks for the help.

What about over torqing them? If i dont have any leaks it couldnt effect anyting else could it?

I cant pin point where the popping is coming from. It happens about 5-10 minutes after driving. No sounds for the 1st 5 minutes. Seems like it starts after my headers heat up. Honestly...I dont know how they were tightned down. My neighbor was helping me out on the project, and I had to leave to get some relatives, and when I came back...the car was done. He was just supervising me while I was doing most of the work, but I guess he decided to be a nice guy and finish it up for me. he has been a mechanic for like 15 years so im assuming he did it properly...but who knows. He could have screwed something up. Some1 else on this board said he had the same problem. He told me his #7 spark plug was cracked and the popping went away after replacing it.

I would definetly check the plugs. Take the coil pack harness of and its really easy to change all 8 spark plugs. One u get those back bolts out of it its really simple. It removes all the coil packs with like 3 bolts.

Yeah...Ill get it scanned and see whats going on. But since I have a 98 its not a complete coil pack rail. All the coil packs are seperate. Either way, ill get it done. Thanks though.

How did you know it was cracked then? Did it say you were missing a cylinder?

My friend and I searched this site for several hours looking at problems after header installs and finally narrowed it down to the spark plugs and wires. since i only had to use 2 of my 02 sensors i switched those out and it wasnt them and so i decided to take all the plugs back out on the passenger side since they were hard to get in. It wasnt them so i took out the drivers side plugs and it was the back plug. I actually missed it at first because the crack was so small.

My car is actually running good now. I suppose the pcm just finally adjusted itself. Last night I ran a 12.85@110.8

I also let someone who new a lot about headers listen for leaks and he said i had several on the passenger side. I havent retorqued those yet but i have the drivers side which i dont have any leaks on. so im hoping once i retorque that side ill be running a bit stronger.

consistently 13.2-13.3 but it was in temps of about 80. Last night it was like 88 and the humidity was very high. I was surprised by that time. Best I ever run was 13.08 at like 66 and i hooked very good.

I only got a 2.03 60' so i think i can improve that time a little also w/o a tuning.

Well I got my car scanned today. Only codes I was running were with the 02's. Now I just need to check all of my plugs . Damnit.
