That's abnormally high and probably why you feel
the "slam" into gear (esp. w/ a stock converter).
I upped mine to 650RPM as I have a looser converter
and occasionally get some idle hunting.
I'd say your #1 suspect shoulf be a vacuum leak,
followed by something messed up with your IAC
or throttle body stop, drilled hole, etc.
If it hasn't been programmed to be at 900, the
IAC counts should be pegged (low I think) as
the PCM tries to get idle RPM down but can't.

Mine idles a little less than 1,000 RPM since the cam swap, before it idled right at 1,000, according to the tach of course. ATAP showed it to idle around 800 before the cam, all the while showing 1,000.
