My 98 Z28 has an Oct. 1997 born on date and it is not kin to any turtle I have seen so far. I read how some people complain that the can't smoke tires from anything other that a rolling start and I don't know what their problems be but I certainly don't have them.I can lite the fire and alert every Highway Patrol in the area all at once. All done with a stock 2.73 rear end with stock converter. But the only problem I have seen so far is N.C. sold them Mustangs and now the Law has their own Camaro Fleet.

I had the opportunity to own both a 1998 Z28 and a 2002 SS at the same time. Both were dyno'd at the same shop. My 1998 dyno'd a couple points higher than the 2002! Negligible, but higher. I think it was because my 2002 only had 1000 miles on it and wasn't broken in. I haven't re-dyno'd the 2002 and the 1998 has been sold.

Ive been trying to do as much research as possible on the 98 cars. My friends 98 Z 3:23 auto runs 13.9 @ 99mph to 14.1 @ 98mph consistantly. It ran a little slower after adding a B&B TriFlow Catback. What I have discovered is some 98s have a bad KS and it is too sensitive. Effectively retarding the timing for nothing and causing them to run slower than others. I have not been able to find much more info about it.

It's really hit and miss.

So the major differences are??? Injectors and the computer? Granted, they don't have the LS6 intake and the better manifolds, but 99's have the same handicap.

I used to think it was the 2000's that were the slower ones, but mine seems to be right on track

Why is it out of all the posts no one has mentioned the newer #241 style factory heads the come on the '01 and up LS1 motors? I've been told by multiple well known supporting LS1tech vendors that these usually dyno 10 more HP over the older '97 through '00 style LS1 heads. And to proove my point, look how the #241 castings always bring more money in the for sale section.

i personally dont believe that the 01s and 02 are faster then 98-99 LS1s, i raced a friend of mine in a 00 SS bone stock and all i had was a chockmaster a SLP lid, i beat him by 2 cars. i also have another friend with a 01 T/A will all of the same mods as me except the LS6 intake of course and sometimes he pulls on he and sometimes i pull on him, its a drivers race.

Thumbs up

Before I bought my Z28 I drove a '99 SS, the '98 was quicker.

For comparison sakes.. my bone stock 98 TA A4 [3.23s] dynoed at 307 rwhp.. with 91,250 miles on the odo..

The only changes were plugs [TR 55], wires [GM Performance 8.5mm], and fuel filter [OEM]

BPLS1, your experience fits the LS1 perfectly. Any given LS1 can outperform another at any time. They seem to have minds of their own. While on paper the 01 and 02s should win every race.. it just doesnt happen. The 98s were not disadvantaged in any obvious way and are on par with the typical LS1 characteristics. I have only found the knock sensor issue which explains why some dyno much lower than other LS1 cars. Otherwise, the underrated factory numbers are useless.. and all the LS1s across the board (Fbody 98 to 02) are pretty much equal.

I have a 99' and when it dynoed stock it put down 294rwhp. My friends stock put down 310rwhp and his was a 98'. So I guess it varies. Weird if you ask me.

Mine dyno'd 290 rwhp stock and ran a 13.27 @ 105 mph with A4 bone stock. Fast, but not the fastest stock LS1.

dont worry about the power, mine is bone stock, and it still keeps the ricers at bay! they may dyno a little less, especially the A4's, but thats nothing that cant be solved with a cam, and exhaust!!!

I frickin love my car, and I wouldnt trade it for anything! (except an authentic ZL1)

LS1MONSTER You do know there is a recall on our EGR's. Mine set off the SES light I took it to a friend to have it scanned. Found out it was the EGR. I took it to the dealer to get it fixed and there was no charge. I asked why they said there is a recall. I hope they didn't charge you.
